Gabriel Perelle Figurative Prints
French, 1604-1677
Gabriel Perelle was a French draughtsman and printmaker, born in Vernon. He began his career as a pupil of the portraitist Simon Vouet, but swiftly specialised in classical landscapes not dissimilar to those of Francisque Millet. With his sons Nicolas and Adam, whose work is often highly similar to their father's, he founded a printmaking workshop which produced hundreds of printed views.
Gabriel produced prints after numerous artists including Israël Silvestre, Paul Bril, Jacques Callot, Michel Corneille the Elder, Jan Asselijn, Jacques Fouquières, Cornelis Poelenburg, and Sébastien Pontault de Beaulieu - in short, the great topographical draughtsmen of the 16th and early 17th centuries. It was from these artists that Perelle developed his own style of draughtsmanship, with Callot and Silvestre among the foremost influences on his hand.to
