American
Gordon Martz and Jane Martz were prominent designers and creators of simple, elegant, handcrafted ceramic goods. Their vintage mid-century modern designs for table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers and pendants are daring but relaxed and make for versatile additions to any space.
Jane Martz’s grandmother established the family-owned American lampshades company Marshall Studios in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1922. Jessie “Muz” Marshall produced hand-painted lampshades out of her home, then expanded to include lamp bases made of wood. The business later moved to Veedersburg. After studying at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Jane and Gordon joined the company in the early 1950s and stepped in to run Marshall Studios after it had been managed by Jane’s parents. Gordon and Jane instilled the brand with fresh energy and new ideas. They introduced innovative modernist stoneware lamps, decorative accessories and more that became immediately popular with new homeowners of the era. Later, there was a return to lamp bases made solely of wood, and floor lamps, bookends and tables with tile tops appeared in the company catalogs.
The Marshall Studios M101 lamp was featured in the Museum of Modern Art’s “Good Design” exhibit in 1953, which also featured the work of other mid-century luminaries such as Jens Risom, Paul McCobb, George Nelson and more.
Gordon and Jane explored color and texture at the company during the 1950s and ‘60s and continued the rich legacy of craftsmanship for which Marshall Studios had become known. The manufacturer secured government contracts and their works were featured in Interiors magazine. Etchings and other decoration continued to be done by hand, and Jane eventually also took an interest in the fabric and textiles used to hand-cover the paper shades, producing a complementary line of hand-woven pillows and other goods.

This is a beautiful handblown Glass Millefiori Paperweight by Vasart, Scotland, Circa 1950s.
This paperweight is handmade with a Millefiori, ten spoke radial cane design.
having Latticino Spokes. The predominant colours are red, green, blue and white colour combination gives excellent contrast producing a very distinctive weight.
The pontil mark to the base has been ground down giving a somewhat matt finish to the ventral section.
There are no makers markings on the base that we can see.
VASART HISTORY
Pre 1946, Salvador Ysart and his 3 sons were working for Moncrieff Glass, then In September 1946, Salvador Ysart and two of his sons (Vincent & Augustine) established Ysart Brothers Glass (trading as "Vasart", formed from the names 'Vincent', 'Augustine' and 'Salvador'. At that time Paul Ysart remained working for Moncrieff.

ABOUT BOOKENDS
This exquisite pair of bookends, created by the renowned French sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, epitomizes the grace and emotional depth of the Belle Époque era. Each bookend is a remarkable sculpture in its own right, yet when placed together, they form an inseparable narrative composition, bound by a shared plot. One bookend captures the passionate embrace of Harlequin and his mistress, a tender yet intense moment frozen in time. The second bookend portrays Pierrot, lost in the anguish of jealousy, his expression and posture radiating sorrow and longing. Together, these two figurative sculptures create a dramatic scene, where the books they support become part of the stage set, acting as a barrier between the characters—much like a stage wall in a theatrical performance. The interplay of emotion and movement in this captivating sculptural pair makes it a true masterpiece, seamlessly blending art with functionality.
ABOUT SCULPTOR
Émile Antoine Bordelles (French, 1861 - 1929) was an influential and prolific French sculptor and teacher. He was a student of Auguste Rodin, a teacher of Giacometti and Henri Matisse, and an important figure in the Art Deco movement and the transition from the Beaux-Arts seyle to modern sculp[ture. His studio became the Musee Bourdelle, an art museum dedicated to his work, located at 18, rue Antoine Bourdelle, in the15th arondissement of Paris, France. His very well known for his use of quivering Romanesque forms in his depictions of mythological figures. One of his best known works Hercules the Archer (1909), was a commissioned sculpture for the financier Gabriel Thomas. Born Émile-Antoine Bourdelle on October 30, 1861 in Montauban, France, he learned woodworking as a youth from his father who was a cabinetmaker. While assisting his father during the workday, he studied drawing at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse in the evening. Moving to Paris in 1885, the artist became an assistant to Auguste Rodin in 1893, Rodin’s influence is evident in many of Bourdelle’s early sculptures. By 1900, he had begun receiving commissions for a number of theaters and later taught classes at his studio to young artist such as Alberto Giacometti and Otto Gutfreund...
