With the second printed signature in the stone, lower left. Printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. Published by Vollard, Paris. A very good impression of this important lithograph with strong colors. Renoir (1841-1919) was, along with Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, a founder of the Société Anonyme Coopérative des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs and a key organizer of the 1870s Impressionist exhibitions. He is best known for his renditions of the sensuous and monumental bathing nudes that he produced from the 1880s onward, many of which were inspired by the works of Titian, Rubens, and 18th-century French painters such as Boucher and Fragonard. Like many of his contemporaries, Renoir embraced printmaking as a medium that allowed for more freedom of expression and experimentation. Ambroise Vollard, the eminent Parisian dealer and publisher, and Auguste Clot, the famed lithography printer, were both extremely instrumental in Renoir's foray into printmaking. They greatly encouraged and facilitated his practice of the medium. Vollard met Renoir during the height of Renoir's career and saw the opportunity for lithography to help disseminate the artist's ever popular work, and Clot worked closely with Renoir to masterfully capture the delicate quality of his pastels in color lithography. Renoir began producing lithographs and etchings in the late 1880s and created an oeuvre over the following two decades consisting of 25 etchings and 29 lithographs, many of them commissioned for various albums or books. His most famous prints reproduce popular compositions he had established in earlier paintings. The current lot is based on an 1893 oil and pastel painting which represents the artist Berthe Morisot's daughter pinning a flower on her cousin's hat. Jane Dickson has been exhibiting her oil stick painting, watercolor drawing, and prints in museums and galleries domestically and internationally for two decades. She frequently works with unusual surfaces such as Astroturf, sandpaper, vinyl, or carpet to exploit the implicit references and the textural possibilities these materials offer. She was part of an eclectic East Village (Greenwich village) scene that included Keith Haring, John Crash Matos, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Kenny Scharf, David Wojnarowicz, Robert Crumb and Richard Hambleton. After moving to the city in 1977, Dickson worked as a programmer for the iconic Times Square billboard project and with collectives Fashion Moda (with Jenny Holzer) and Collaborative Projects Inc. As a participant in the iconic Colab DIY “Times Square Show” and “Real Estate Show” of 1980, her work was seen alongside artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fab 5 Freddy, Kenny Scharf, and Kiki Smith. Dickson’s paintings explore subjects such as peep shows, carnivals, and demolition derbies with dark irony. Widely exhibited, Dickson’s work has been shown in the 1985 Whitney Biennial Solo exhibitions of her work have been shown at The Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris, Creative Time, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2008 she completed a mosaic for MTA in the 42nd street station. In 2010 she was invited to paint a leather jacket for the Andy Warhol Museum. In the early eighties, Warhol collected leather jackets, including one painted with his portrait and that of Jean-Michel Basquiat by the new wave artist Stefano Castronovo. Artists commissioned for this project include Castronovo, Rita Ackermann, Frederick “Fab Five Freddy” Brathwaite, Dan Colen, Ronnie Cutrone, Jane Dickson, Duncan Hannah, Lee Quinones, Tom Sachs, Kenny Scharf, Walter Steding and Ouattara Watts. Her images have appeared extensively in books and periodicals. She received awards from the National Academy of Arts & Science, the Joan Mitchell Foundation and was the recipient of the Bau Residency in Cassis, France.
