Hernan Bas Mixed Media

American, b. 1978

Artist Hernan Bas is best known for the lively depictions of nineteenth-century-style waifs, mythological creatures and dandies that permeate his Expressionist paintings and prints. Whether they’re cheerful or somber, Bas’s subjects, which are often imbued with humor and homoeroticism, are typically positioned in a richly colored fantastic landscape. He views them as characters in a broader story that he tells throughout his work.

Born in Miami, Florida, Bas had a penchant for drawing and painting as young as four years old. He entered the art magnet program in the Miami public school system, where teachers helped foster his talent and passion for the arts.

Bas entered art school in seventh grade. His post-high school education took shape at the New World School of the Arts of Miami. After graduating in 1996 from New World, Bas enrolled in The Cooper Union — an exclusive arts academy in New York City. He left The Cooper Union after a semester, believing he'd had all the art training he was going to need.

Though he considers himself a painter by trade, Bas enjoys experimenting with other media. He has tried his hand at photography and film, and eventually set up a darkroom in his studio basement.

Bas’s first exhibition took place in 2001 at Miami’s Fredric Snitzer Gallery, and it didn't take long for the art scene to take notice. The artist has since enjoyed a global audience and has had solo and group showings around the world — including New York, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Bas’s art is held in many public collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Samuso: Space for Contemporary Art in Seoul, South Korea. He lives and works between Miami and Detroit.

Elui with World Record Cow Elephant Tusk, 47 lbs., Marsabit Forest, Kenya – Art
By Peter Beard
Located in Zurich, CH
PETER BEARD (1938–2020, USA) Elui with World Record Cow Elephant Tusk, 47 lbs., Marsabit Forest, Kenya, 1962/2006 Color print with gelatin silver print collage, watercolor, tempera paint, ink Sheet 141 x 108,6 cm (55 1/2 x 42 3/4 in.) Unique Signed recto and verso in ink Peter Beard (1938–2020) was an American artist who lived and worked in New York and Kenya. In Africa Peter Beard found the central theme of his life, the destruction of the natural animal world by man and civilization. His photographs of Africa, African animals and the journals that often integrate his photographs have been widely shown and published since the 1960s. Inspired by earlier trips to Africa in both 1955 and 1960, Beard traveled to Kenya upon graduation. Working at Tsavo National Park, he photographed and documented the demise of 35,000 elephants and other wildlife, later to become the subject of his iconic book, “The End of the Game...

Ted Adams’ first solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery juxtaposes surrealism with the documentary art form. What differentiates Mr. Adams’ work from traditional photojournalism is his keen eye for capturing the irony in the events that unfold before our eyes. It is the found objects in everyday life to which Adams is most attuned. He creates a subtle mood and visual mystery that conveys meaning not only from the image itself but also through imagining what exists just beyond the frame. "I see photography as a way of cropping the world—selectively taking things out of context—which often results in stripping the meaning out of the original subject matter, or at least making the image open to interpretation. It’s the opposite of traditional photojournalism whose intention is to create ‘narrative’ and context rather than discard them." While he has exhibited artistic photography in a variety of genres, in the past five years he turned his artistic eye inward to reflect a more autobiographical tone. While some people compare his work to that of Robert Frank, Adams finds himself more and more influenced by Larry Clark whose career was built on pictures drawn from his own life and drug-addled friends rather than a specific documentary mission. The unique presentation of this collection of twenty-three silver gelatin prints enhances the voyeuristic sensibility of Mr. Adams’ work. Each photograph is jewel box in size, measuring 4" x 6" to invite the viewer in to make an intimate appraisal. The craftsmanship of the wide, dark wood frames hearkens back to late 19th-century Shaker design—yet the aesthetic is boldly contemporary, providing a strong backdrop to draw the viewer’s gaze directly to the subject matter. This artisanship extends to the printing where Adams exhibits his skills in traditional darkroom processes. He shoots mostly with Leica and Nikon 35mm film cameras...

Black and White Photography by Cuban Photographer René Peña, Self Portrait
By Rene Peña
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Limited Edition Series. Black and White Photography by Cuban Photographer René Peña, Self Portrait René Peña (Rene de Jesus Pena Gonzalez) is a self-taught photographer born in Havana, Cuba in 1957. His photography is characterized by stark contrasts, between black and white, subject and background, subject and object. His work often focuses on the duality between human inability to escape institutionalization and human desire for individualism. His interest in contrast is also reflected in his place of residence: Peña currently inhabits the Cerro neighborhood of Cuba which is home to a mostly poor African-Caribbean population, despite having been an enclave of Havana's richest families in the 19th century. René Peña graduated from the Higher pedagogic Institute of Foreign Languages, University of Havana with a specialization in English in 1983. In the late 1980s he entered the national world of photography and since 1990 became leader of the new trends of Cuban photography...
