James Brade Sword Paintings
American, 1839-1915
Philadelphia artist, James Brade Sword studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and with George Washington Nicholson, noted Philadelphia landscapist. Sword visited Conanicut Island, Rhode Island in 1881 and spent summers there, painting along the shoreline. Long Pond on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusettts, is the rare and breathtaking view depicted here, painted at the tranquil moment of dusk. Sword exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1876-1906), in the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 and was founder of the Art Club of Philadelphia, president of the Philadelphia Society of Artists, and the Artists' Fune Society.
