James Jean Figurative Prints
Taiwanese, American, b. 1979
James Jean is a Taiwanese-American visual artist, known for both his commercial work and fine art gallery work. He is known in the American comics industry as a cover artist for various books published by DC Comics, as well as for his work for Prada, ESPN and Atlantic Records. His work, which has been collected in numerous volumes, has been compared by The New York Times to that of Maxfield Parrish.
Jean was born in Taiwan and was raised in Parsippany-Troy Hills, New Jersey. He was educated at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, from which he graduated in 2001.
In 2001, Jean became a cover artist for DC Comics, garnering seven Eisner awards, three consecutive Harvey awards, two gold medals and a silver from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, and a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators of New York. He also worked in advertising, and has contributed to many national and international publications.
His clients included Time Magazine, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Spin, ESPN, Atlantic Records, Target, Playboy, Knopf, Prada among others. He illustrated covers for the comic book series Fables and The Umbrella Academy, for which he has won six Eisner Awards for "Best Cover Artist". In 2006 he won Best Artist from the World Fantasy Awards.
In 2008, Jean retired from illustration and commercial projects in order to focus on painting.
In 2007, Jean created a mural for the Prada Epicenter stores in New York and Los Angeles. He also created a backdrop for Prada's Spring/Summer 2008 show in Milan.
Aspects of the Epicenter mural and the Milan wallpaper were transformed into clothing, handbags, shoes, and packaging. Prada undertook a global campaign that featured Jean's work in advertising environments, animation, and special events.
In 2008, Jean again collaborated with Prada, developing an animated short based on the wallpapers, clothing, and accessories produced in 2007. He wrote, storyboarded, and did the visual development for the animation, which would be eventually titled Trembled Blossoms, taken from the poem Ode to Psyche by John Keats.
In 2010, Jean was commissioned by fashion designer Phillip Lim to paint a series of portraits featuring Los Angeles-based actors, musicians, and tastemakers, including Rachel Bilson, Selma Blair, and Devendra Banhart.
Dana Jennings of The New York Times says of Jean's work: "And, as with his Fables work, the paintings and illustrations are often suffused with a dreamy romanticism and lyricism worthy of Maxfield Parrish, even as Mr. Jean subverts those and other isms."to

----------------------------------
Wilhelm Schlote (born March 4, 1946 in Lüdenscheid) is a German artist, children's book author, cartoonist and caricaturist.
Schlote grew up in Essen. His first art teacher was Heinz Mack (member of the artist group ZERO), who recognized Wilhelm Schlote's talent for drawing early on. His mentor and friend Albert Schulze-Vellinghausen, who, as a literary critic for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), was the predecessor of Marcel Reich-Ranicki, was just as philosophically influential. After graduating from high school, Schlote studied philosophy in Bonn until 1968 and then art at the Kunsthochschule Kassel until 1972. From 1973 to 1978 he was a teacher in higher education in Kassel and Hamburg. Simultaneously with the decision to go to Paris, Schlote was offered a professorship at a German art college. In 1978, however, Schlote decided to move to France, where he lived partly in Nice, but mainly in Paris. In 1980 he exhibited for the first time in the Medical Faculty of St. Germain des Pres in Paris. Since 2011 Wilhelm Schlote lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
In 1968 Schlote published the first of a total of 35 children's books. Starting in 1976 he published cartoon postcards - the so-called "Schlote-Karten" - and in the same year received the German Youth Book Prize for “I wish for a hippopotamus today”. In 1991 he was awarded by the "Académie Calvet"; the award was presented to him by Catherine Deneuve and Claude Chabrol. Schlote's cartoons and drawings have appeared in magazines such as Die Zeit, Die Welt, The New Yorker, Le Monde and Le Figaro. He creates his city posters...

James Jean - Eden - Contemporary Art
By James Jean
Located in Asheville, NC
Adam, drunk from fermented juice, nods off beneath the Tree of Knowledge. No longer under Adam’s surveillance, Eve contemplates a heavy bounty of fruit overhead. She seeks the pure forbidden fruit from the vine, not the rotten, intoxicating remnants that they were given to consume. The many facets of Eve radiate from her body in petals of personae, masking her desire for the truth. The Tree opens its arms in a final embrace as the sun sets on Paradise, and a new world emerges.
Eden features multiple dimensional effects throughout the print. The fruit gleams in a polished, high gloss finish. Subtle holographic line work is imprinted throughout the leaves and on Eve's body, catching the light and reflecting an array of colors that echo the color palette. The chop has delicately raised and frost-enhanced areas creating an illusion between the fruit and the hidden faces.

James Jean - Chelone - Contemporary Art
By James Jean
Located in Asheville, NC
"Chelone, the nymph who didn't want to party, was condemned by Zeus to forever carry her home on her back for failing to attend his wedding. Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. Transformed into a tortoise and sentenced to a lifetime of home confinement, Chelone has decorated her abode with the most decadent of details. The print is entirely produced on special metallic paper, which retains all the details of the original painting while imparting a luxurious sheen. The tortoise shell, octopus, and Chelone's hair are dimensionally enhanced, and details on the shell and water are silkscreened in diamond dust. A custom embossment of a hermit crab completes the narrative."

James Jean - Aurelians - Contemporary Art
By James Jean
Located in Asheville, NC
The term Aurelian refers to someone who is interested in butterflies. It also refers to Aurelian, the Roman Emperor from 270 - 275 AD, who ascended to the throne through the military from humble beginnings. Therefore, the use of the term may come from the idea that great things can emerge from lowly or modest sources, like how the butterfly emerges from a chrysalis after beginning life as a caterpillar. The etymology of Aurelian is also related to aureolus, which means golden, or golden in nature. So, the three young girls in Aurelians are surrounded by a yellow summer sky punctuated by golden daytime stars. They chase butterflies as part of a childhood ritual, the summers fleeting and fading away as they transform into adults. In fact, I remember that there used to be many more insects around when I was a child growing up and playing in the woods. Insects would constantly invade the house and backyard, and the spring and summer would bring swarms of fireflies and bees. Now, I don’t see as many bugs around. So it comes as no surprise that a recent report says that 40% of the world’s population of insects are in decline. However, Los Angeles recently experienced an unusually massive butterfly migration due to the heavy rains. Swarms of butterflies flew through Los Angeles and over the freeways as they journeyed up to northern California. This particular species of butterfly is called the Painted Lady, and I thought of the Aurelians, trying to capture the butterflies in the ephemeral moments of their youth. - James Jean...
