James Stuart Park Art

Scottish, 1862-1933

James Stuart Park spent much of his career painting flowers and it is, for these works, that he is best known. His early flower paintings, of the late 1880s, are regarded as works of brilliance, in terms of their design and use of color. Park's focus on design and decorative qualities, in his paintings of the late 19th century, lead to the emergence of an abstract element in his work. While in earlier works, the vases and surfaces which supported his flower arrangements, played an important part in the compositions, in works such as this, they are no longer seen. Only, the bright colours of the petals emerge out of the dark background.

James Stuart Park was born on the 29th of April, 1862, in Kidderminster, Worcestershire. His father likely worked in the carpet industry in Kidderminster, having moved from Catrine. His mother was originally from Craigie. When still quite young, he returned with his family to the West of Scotland, where his father is later recorded as a carpet designer. Around the mid-1880s, Park attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art and first exhibited at the Glasgow Institute, in 1883. It is thought, at this time, he was apprenticed to be an engineer, however, his talent for painting developed and with further studies in Paris and Glasgow, he gave up all notion of any other profession. For almost the next three years, from 1889, he developed a style of painting, which was original in its approach and which did much to enhance his reputation in Glasgow, at that time. This attention resulted in a series of early flower studies, which had a quality and freshness that set a basis for all his future work.

Although he painted several portraits, it is his flower paintings, which preoccupied his output and led to his inclusion to a group of painters, who came to be known as the Glasgow School and his involvement did much to further his career. Known collectively as The Glasgow Boys, there would be times, when many of these friends would travel together, painting and exchanging ideas. During this time, Park had a studio in Glasgow and exhibited widely. By the late 1890s, he had settled his home in Kilmarnock and 1902, he married Helen Fullarton, a girl from Saltcoats. His address is given as 15 South Hamilton Street.

Park continued to develop his style, while his paintings enjoyed a great deal of popularity. To meet the demand for his work, he would use an outbuilding at Bellfield House, Kilmarnock, which he used as a studio and which gave access to the greenhouses, which served this local estate. The arrangement provided an abundance of subject material for him to work with. He later rented a flat on London Road, Kilmarnock and later, bought the half villa 'Elmslie', also on London Road. He had five children, two boys, John and Charlie and three girls, Mary, Helen and Irene. There continues to be a family connection with Kilmarnock, up until the present. Park is still remembered, towards the end of his life, travelling about Kilmarnock by bicycle, with canvases strapped to his back. An article in the Scots Pictorial of June 1900 refers to the fact that he was a splendid rider and that, in the summer of 1899, he travelled from Glasgow to London by bicycle, in three days. He continued to exhibit regularly, having an annual exhibition every February, in the McLellan Galleries, Glasgow.

Still life with a Chinese bowl by Jean Grimal
By Jean Grimal
Located in Gent, VOV
Jean Grimal is a true 20th century discovery. This breathtaking piece is a gorgeous example of his mastery as an artist. He beautifully creates chiaroscuro in this painting. The way the light touches the edges of the Chinese bowl and the grapes is an example of his skill in representing light. Jean Grimal (1942-1998) was born in the town of Tulle, France in 1942. Jean’s family moved to Paris when he was 8 years of age. After receiving a classical French education with studies in Latin and Greek, Jean Grimal entered the University to receive his Baccalaureate. He then attended Claude Barnard School for three years, when he received his Art Degree.  Upon completion Grimal taught art for seven years.  As Grimal’s own interest in formal painting and art began to possess him, the artist’s destiny changed.  In 1967 Jean Grimal stepped aside from teaching and pursued a career in professional painting and working as an illustrator in advertising.  As an advertising illustrator, Grimal worked with Lise Goldfard for more than 25 years at Studio 44 where they collaborated with major and important accounts, such as: Air France, Christofle, Peugeot, Lacoste, to name a few. At the same time he began presenting his formal paintings to galleries in Paris and Cannes, France and in London and Windsor, England.  Much to his surprise, Grimal found that his paintings were sought after by major art galleries and collectors throughout Europe.  After a number of years of being an important and successful art illustrator for these major accounts, he found himself having to choose between the two.  Fortunately for collectors, he chose to dedicate his life to the classical style of painting.  Jean looked at the simplest things in life through a microscope, where he could take the simplest object and depict the age of the fruit or the leaf. Jean Grimal received great pleasure from his work and painted for over thirty years.  As his style matured and became ever more perfect Jean Grimal truly reached the pinnacle of his career.  The artist’s methods were particularly distinguished when measured against his peers.  Grimal’s painting skill was distinctive and exceptional. Jean Grimal was known for his realistic trompe l’oeil and still life paintings.  The artist would carefully arrange the objects to form a satisfying composition.  By painting every shadow, highlight, and reflection within each composition Grimal brought mundane subjects to life.  His tight rendering combined with his attention to light and detail allowed him to blur the lines between illusion and reality, truly making his works one of a kind.  Grimal’s trompe l’oeil paintings consist of intricate compositions of cards, envelopes, photographs, paper of different materials and weights, backs of canvases, images of other artists’ works, kitchen utensils, pistols, and more.  Grimal had a talent for mastering these illusions that deceive the eye in his trompe l’oeil paintings.    No matter what genre Grimal was painting, tight, unperceivable brushwork characterizes his work.  The artist painted every crease and crinkle, every shadow and highlight, every detail.  By doing so, he was able to capture each individual surface texture of the objects in his paintings.  Grimal was also fabulous at depicting light in his paintings- often contrasting strong lights with strong darks, creating chiaroscuro modeling.  His still life paintings are reminiscent of Dutch seventeenth century...

A Still Life of Begonias
By James Stuart Park
Located in St. Albans, GB
James Stuart Park Scottish School Oil Canvas Picture Size: 30 x 24" (76 x 60cm) Outside Frame Size: 40 x 34" (102 x 86cm) Park lived from 1862 – 1933 and was born in Kidderminster. He lived in Glasgow from 1883 and later moved to Kilmarnock in 1904. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and then in Paris, at the Académie Julian with Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre, and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, with Ferrnand Cormon. He started out as a portraitist but, finding it difficult to support himself, he turned to flower pieces. Painting carefully arranged bouquets of roses, lilies, orchids and azaleas he developed a very individual technique, using thick and rapid strokes against a very dark background, suggesting, rather than defining, the texture and colour of flowers. His radically simplified style, in which the petals and flowerheads are almost abstracted and painted in rapid, cursive strokes, found favour with the Glasgow Boys and – although he was unique amongst them as almost solely a painter of flowers – he became a member of the group, along with his peers: Joseph Crawhall...
