Jose Manuel Broto Abstract Prints

Spanish, b. 1949
José Manuel Broto Gimeno was born in Zaragoza in 1949. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in his hometown and in 1972 he moved to Barcelona. Along with Javier Rubio, Xavier Grau and Gonzalo Tena forms the Trama group and in 1976 participate in the exhibition "Per una crítica de la pintura" at the renowned Galería Maeght, having Antoni Tàpies' support. Since its establishment, the group will work moreover the field of abstraction versus the artistic conceptualism of the moment. This group of artists also published a magazine which they called, likewise, Trama, but only managed to bring out a couple of numbers. While Broto's early works were of a constructivist nature, since 1972 the artist evolves to the simplest informalism, and produces works based on elemental geometric figures on plane colored backgrounds. In 1985 he moves to Paris and during this stay of almost a decade, he meets other Spanish artists such as Miquel Barceló, Miguel Ángel Campano or José María Sicilia. In the early 80s his creations are made on large canvases and the artist is focused in color and its expressive qualities. Broto combines the abstract forms with references to geometric objects or signs taken from other languages such as mathematics, music or writing. During these last years his work has been simplified in terms of materials and his informalism is based on the color, as a way to express and excite, and the gesture, the result of a poetic and metaphysical thought. Among the many solo shows he's had stands out the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía's retrospective (Madrid, 1996) and the traveling exhibition "Broto. Rever", organized by the General Directorate of Cultural and Scientific Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain (Chile, Mexico and Montevideo, 2004). His work has been recognized with the Grand Prize of the Salon de Montrouge (France, 1988), the National Prize of Plastic Arts of Spain (1995), the ARCO Award Critics (1997) and Goya Award Recorded Aragon 2003. Broto's work is present in major museums around the world such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the IVAM in Valencia, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the FRAC (Fond Régional D'Art Contemporain) in Midi -Pyrenees, France and Atheneum Museum in Helsinki, Finland, among others.

Abstract Color Field Gradient Monoprint Aquatint Etching California Minimalism
By Joe Novak
Located in Surfside, FL
"Voices XXI" Aquatint Etching • Monoprint Image: 12”x 14” • Paper: 30”x 22” • 2001 Hand signed and numbered 1/1 on BFK Rives paper. Joe Novak (1930-2019) California Contemporary Minimalist. His work is about the exploration of color and light through abstraction, with tonal gradations that infuse them with a meditative quality. During the eighties and nineties, he painted large monochromatic color field canvases with tonal gradations and soft edges that infuse them with a meditative quality and a sense of movement. When illuminated they become glowing surfaces of color and light. His artistic background and work link him closely with the first generation abstract expressionists of the New York School. Major influences include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, and his mentors, Peter Busa and Esteban Vicente, whom he met and befriended during the eighties while living and painting in East Hampton. During the nineties, while living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Novak initiated a project called "Light Emanations", in which he created digital computerized programs of changing light levels and configurations on a selection of his large paintings, dramatically illustrating the effect of light changes on color perception. Novak's body of work is extensive and include painting on canvas, panel and paper as well as monotypes, drawings, assemblages, mixed media and prints. He has often worked in series, focusing on a particular medium for years. Among these are "Meditations" (color pencil drawings), "Voices" and "Voices 2" (color aquatint etchings), "Echoes" (painting assemblage with minerals) and "Colors" (350 miniature panel paintings). In recent years his paintings have become more gestural, often with musical allusions. His work bears a relationship to the Light & Space Movement and Minimalism artists James Turrell, Larry Bell, Craig Kauffman, Billy Al Bengston, Peter Alexander, Laddie John Dill, Lita Albuquerque. these are also anticipative of the aquatint etching works by Anish Kapoor. Color Gradient, Abstract Art, Land Art. During the eighties and nineties, he painted large monochromatic color field canvases with tonal gradations and soft edges that infuse them with a meditative quality and a sense of movement. When illuminated they become glowing surfaces of color and light. Critic Christopher Knight wrote, Novak is an unabashed Color Field painter. His paintings and aquatints at Bert Green Fine Arts — the Santa Fe artist's third show there — feature works that will call to mind abstractions as diverse as those by Helen Frankenthaler, Mark Rothko and Morris Louis and the landscape abstractions of Joe Goode. Novak's work is in many public and private collections, including numerous museum collections. He spent his last years living in Palm Springs. Selected Group Exhibitions Bert Green Fine Art, Chicago, Illinois "Joe Novak/Huck Lewis-Bennett: A Collaboration", Stephen Archdeacon Gallery, Palm Springs Melissa Morgan Fine Art, Palm Desert, California "Cutting Edge", Zane Bennett Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico "Non Objectivity", Pharmaka Gallery, Los Angeles, California Farrell Fischoff Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico Eagle Gallery, London, England EVO Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico Jill George...

Alan Shields Alice in Grayland, 1979 Mixed media collage: Etching, aquatint, screen print with stitching and collage on hand made paper Hand signed, dated, titled and numbered 1/13 by Alan Shields on the front Unique variant This very unique and imaginative mixed media paper collage with stitching and fabric is floated and framed in a museum quality white wood frame with UV plexiglass. It is hand signed, dated, titled and numbered from the limited edition of 13 - but each is a unique variant. Frame included: Measurements: Frame: 27.75 x 22.5 x 2 inches Artwork: 23.5 x 18 inches Catalogue Raisonne: K. Tyler Tyler Graphics: Catalogue Raisonné, 1974-1985, New York: Abbeville Press, 1987. p. 289. Alan Shields came of age artistically in the late 1960s in New York. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition. About Alan Shields: Alan Shields (b. 1944, Herington, KS; d. 2005, Shelter Island, NY) created unique, imaginative, and theatrical structures using unconventional materials and vibrant color. His three-dimensional paintings convey a playful, deconstructive impulse through the incorporation of un-stretched hand-dyed canvas, rope, yarn, beads, and wood. Shields moved to New York City in 1968, where he showed with Paula Cooper...
