We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning circa 1840 Lambs of Manchester fully stamped Library bookcase with secrataire desk and drawers A very rare and highly collectable enormous library bookcase. The top section is a Duke bookcase so it has a space at the bottom for storing additional books or trinkets, the middle section is a sliding secrataire desk, it has a green leather drop front writing surface the internal drawers are satin wood. The base section has a quantity of drawers and a lead lined ice bucket cupboard All the locks are fully stamped and early original Chubbs Victoria, they are exquisite quality. The top right drawer is stamped with the model serial number and Lambs Manchester We have cleaned waxed and polished it from top to bottom, its good used condition throughout, there will be patina marks all over from genuine age and honest use. There is a key for the top section, no key for the desk Dimensions: Height 272cm top to bottom Top piece 166cm, middle desk 34cm, base section 72cm Width Top piece 127cm, middle desk 123.5cm, base section 117cm Depth Top piece 37cm, middle desk 46cm, base section 40.5cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point Lambs of Manchester were a renowned cabinet making firm, founded by James Lamb. He was a Manchester cabinetmaker who started in the mid Victorian era. James Lamb was born in 1816, he joined the family business and turned it into a high class interior design, decorating and furnishing firm. The firm had a cabinet making workshop in Castleford and their main gallery in John Dalton Street, Manchester, with vast furniture showrooms over three floors showing their quality pieces for sale. The firm was to go onto international success winning medals at the London 1862 Exhibition and the Paris 1867 Exhibition. James Lamb died in 1903, his obituary appeared in The Journal of Decorative Art and British Decorators where it stated that: His name was a synonym for the best in everything that he did from 1850 – 1885, and he towered over everybody in Lancashire and Yorkshire as maker of high class furniture. His name for 50 years stood as a landmark for all that was best in both spheres of industrial art. They employed famous designers of the caliber of Charles Bevan, Bruce Talbert and W.J Estall and were especially well known for their arts and crafts furniture.
