Max Nathan Landscape Paintings

Max Nathan painted naturalistic portraits, figure paintings, genre paintings, still lifes, flowers, interiors and landscapes with fields, forests and beaches. The early paintings' figural representation, quiet image composition and unobtrusive colors seem to bear the influence of teacher Johan Rohdes's tradition-bound style, while the more informal style, looser brushwork and stronger, more light-saturated colors of later paintings testify to French influence. Nathan lived for years in Mols, and these particular local landscapes were the inspiration for some of his best and most atmospheric landscapes. In Nathan’s portraits, he used color to support the characteristics of the model. A lesser known side of Nathan's production is woodcuts, where he sought the clean lines and clear contours. A series of Nathan's small genre paintings show a sense of humor that does not exist in his other art.
