Pearl Took Abstract Paintings

American, 1928-2012

Pearl Took studied at the Skipton Art School (1943-7) and, subsequently, at Sir John Cass College (1947-9). After immigrating to Pasadena, California in 1957 with her family, Took commenced her active career in painting, becoming a teacher at Pasadena City College and Glendale College. She also continued to further her studies in numerous centers including the California State College, the Art Center of Design and the Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design. Took exhibited successfully, both solo and with groups, in Los Angeles County throughout her teaching career in addition to working as a freelance illustrator for the Pasadena Star News.

He attended the Ontario College of Art from 1952 to 1956, and worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a graphic designer until 1960. Inspired by a 1955 exhibition of the “Painters Eleven” at Toronto’s Hart House, as well as American Abstract Expressionist artists such as Robert Motherwell, Jack Tworkov, and Willem de Kooning, Burton shifted his focus toward abstraction in the mid-1950s. Burton showed with the famed Isaacs Gallery in Toronto, becoming one of the youngest members on the gallery’s roster.
