Ralph Gibson Color Photography

American, b. 1939

Ralph Gibson is an American master photographer best known for literally inventing a new language of photography in the 1970s. Gibson was born in Los Angeles on January 16, 1939. Ralph Gibson builds a narrative meaning through contextualization and surreal juxtaposition. He studied photography while in the US Navy and then at the San Francisco Art Institute. He began his professional career as an assistant to Dorothea Lange and went on to work with Robert Frank on two films. Gibson has maintained a lifelong fascination with books and book-making. Since the appearance in 1970 of the Somnambulist, his work has been steadily impelled towards the printed page. To date, he has produced over 40 monographs. His photographs are included in over 150 museum collections around the world and have appeared in hundreds of exhibitions. Gibson has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst Exchange in Berlin, a New York State Council of the Arts Fellowship and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The Rencontres d'Arles festival presented his work in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1989 and 1994. His book Syntax received a mention for the Rencontres d'Arles Book Award in 1983. He was decorated as an Officier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and appointed Commandeur de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. His awards include the Leica Medal of Excellence Award, “150 Years of Photography” Award from the Photographic Society of Japan, a Grande Médaille de la Ville d'Arles and the Lucie Award for lifetime achievement. Gibson also received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from the University of Maryland and a second honorary doctorate from the Ohio Wesleyan University. He has worked exclusively with Leica for almost 50 years. Gibson currently lives in New York and travels frequently to Europe and Brazil.

Luciano Pavarotti (Edition of 100) - 20"x24"
By Dan Springer
Located in New York, NY
This 2013 fine art print caricature, is legend opera star Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007), the most commercially successful tenor of all time, holding the honorific title "King of the High Cs". This caricature was created by artist Dan Springer and shows the maestro singing, mouth wide open, hitting the highest notes in Opera on a Red-Maroon. It was mastered from the original drawing in high resolution digital format and reproduced in a numbered-edition series, on fine art archival pigment paper. Dan’s focus is to elevate the personalities of iconic celebrities by using exaggerations of some of their physical characteristics and also an oversimplification of others. Dan Springer states: “There’s the character and then the caricature. If it’s a celebrity, there’s always a persona that’s a caricature outside of who the celebrity is but in different layers. My goal is to bring out those layers of the character, in a caricature format that is defined by their facial image and their eccentricities.” Dan Springer received his formal art training at the Rhode Island School of Design where he received his BFA in Illustration in 1991. Since then, he has done freelance illustration for various publications including "The New York Times", "The Village Voice", and "Avenue" magazine. He started his fine art career in 1996 when he founded the "4E Gallery" in Tribeca where he and his partner showed various artists, as well as their own work every month. He also showed at numerous galleries and clubs, including the "Ace Gallery", the "Gershwin Gallery", "The Tunnel" and "Faces and Names", (161 W. 54th St.), and "Rumours" (8th Ave. & 55th St.) where he has a permanent exhibition. He has also done live caricatures at "Faces and Names" since they opened in 1997. He has worked as a caricature artist since 1991, including work at Six Flags...
