Koichi Takada: Architecture, Nature, and Design
By Rizzoli International Publications
Located in New York, NY
Author Koichi Takada, Text by Philip Jodidio The first monograph on the Japanese-born, Sydney-based architect, celebrated for his innovative holistic approach to design, nature, and urbanism. Koichi Takada is part of a new generation of architects striving to bring nature back into the urban environment—an approach he developed after living in Tokyo, New York, and London. His architecture reconnects people to the natural environment, drawing inspiration from organic forms and local contexts. This elegant volume showcases a series of Takada’s recent projects, illustrating the unique way his talent connects the natural and the designed, and how it has evolved over the last ten years. Beautiful photographs of buildings and interiors juxtapose against sketches and images of nature—illustrating the aesthetic inspirations behind the designs and the way they embody light, air, and even sound. Philip Jodidio’s texts guide readers through the range of spaces that span from the interiors of the award-winning National Museum of Qatar in Doha and Urban Forest in Brisbane, the “greenest residential building in Australia,” to striking buildings in Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles, China, and the construction of a new space in Tokyo. This unique architectural journey will inspire readers to see architecture with a new mindset. About The Author Koichi Takada graduated from AA School of Architecture, London, and established his own practice, Koichi Takada Architects, in 2008. Philip Jodidio is a specialist in contemporary architecture. As well as having been the editor in chief of the French art magazine Connaissance des Arts for more than twenty years, he is the author of over 100 books...

Illusion in Design: New Trends in Architecture and Interiors
By Rizzoli International Publications
Located in New York, NY
Author Paul Gunther and Gay Giordano Cutting-edge examples of the use of optical illusion in design—from trompe l’oeil to anamorphosis—to solve various challenges, be they space or budget related, or that act as aesthetic features in architecture and the fields that rub elbows with it: art, design, and furniture. This magical volume presents the startling world of illusion in design as employed by today’s architects, interior designers, furniture designers, and others at work bending the appearance of reality for purposes of aesthetics or practicality or fun. From a faux bookcase that masks a room or Prohibition-style bar, to the mind-boggling Escher-like effects achieved by Casa Ceramica, whose optical illusion of a floor dips into valleys and rises into mounds (but is in reality flat), the book is a revelation and an inspiration. It offers to us the possibility that nearly anything can be done, if it can be imagined—even in our own homes. The authors look at residences across the globe, as well as spaces beyond the home, that utilize a myriad of surprising techniques. Included are projects by conceptual designers such as Studio Malka and Vector Architects, as well as established practitioners such as Ferguson and Shamamian, G. P. Schafer, Peter Pennoyer...

The history of H. Stern begins with Hans Stern, who fled with his parents to Rio de Janeiro at the onset of World War II. There, he landed a job working for the precious stone and mineral exporter Cristab, regularly visiting mines on horseback. At the remote mines of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil, he cultivated relationships with many of the miners, developing professional connections that would endure for decades. He also developed a fascination with the colorful semi-precious stones found in the area. In 1945, he started his own company, H. Stern, with the goal of marketing Brazilian gemstones. Though the company began as a trader in gemstones, it soon expanded to jewelry, with Stern assembling and training a team of young jewelers. In 1949, H. Stern opened its first jewelry shop in Rio de Janeiro. During the 1980s, the brand debuted its first celebrity collaboration with French actress Catherine Deneuve. By the mid-1990s, the company was opening stores abroad and selling jewelry at international department stores. Today, the company is run by Stern's son, Roberto, who has introduced a broad range of new collections and styles. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of H. Stern jewelry.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024
Yes, Sterns diamonds are real. However, the vast majority of the pieces produced by the jewelry maker feature lab-grown diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, as they are identical in composition to natural gems obtained through mining operations. The difference is that lab-created diamonds are man-made, while natural diamonds are formed within the earth. On 1stDibs, shop a range of antique and vintage diamond jewelry.

How much Irma Stern paintings are worth is based on their historical significance, condition, size and other factors. In 2011, her painting Arab Priest set a new record for the artist's work, selling for more than $4.9 million at auction. The piece is an excellent example of the South African artist's style, which drew inspiration from the work of 19th-century Impressionist painters. No, Robert Motherwell was not a Surrealist painter. The American artist was the youngest member of the New York School, a group of Abstract Expressionists working in art, dance, poetry and music in the 1950s and '60s. However, Motherwell did meet a group of exiled Parisian Surrealists while attending Columbia University to study art history in the 1940s. This encounter proved influential in his style. Inspired by their work, Motherwell began to integrate the idea of “automatism," unmediated gestures that reflect deeper psychological impulses, into his work, pioneering a new form of Abstract Expressionism that came to characterize the New York School. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Robert Motherwell art.

To identify Robert Maxwell pottery, search the bottom for a maker's mark. The American ceramicist incised his signature into the bases of many of his pieces. However, not all Robert Maxwell pottery is marked. As a result, you may also want to look at images of Maxwell's work to become familiar with his style. Maxwell was particularly well-known for using rutile glaze, which lent his pottery a speckled, mottled appearance. However, he experimented with other glazing techniques and even left some items unglazed. Because there is so much variation in his pottery, you may wish to have a certified appraiser or experienced antique dealer help you with the identification process. Explore a collection of Robert Maxwell pottery on 1stDibs.
