Robert Gemmell Hutchison began his working life as a seal engraver, but later studied at the Royal Scottish Academy schools and at the Board of Manufacturers School of Art. From 1878 he exhibited frequently; he was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1895, became an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1901 and a full member in 1911. He also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in Liverpool. He was awarded a third class medal for his work in 1903.
He is well known for his paintings in watercolour and oil of children and childhood, particularly of scenes by the sea. His work is considered to be influenced by The Hague school of painting and by the Scottish Faed family of artists, as well as by Josef Israels...
