Roy Cleveland Nuse Landscape Paintings
American, 1885-1975
Roy C. Nuse was a respected teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1925 to 1954. He lived and painted in Bucks County, Pennsylvania for almost 60 years, working in a plein-air, impressionistic style. He had six children that were often the subjects of some of his best paintings, especially in outdoor, rural, farm settings. He painted landscapes (with and without figures), still lifes and portraits primarily in oil, however he was also known to use pastels.
A native of Springfield, Ohio, Roy dropped out of high school, due to his father's illness, to take a job in a factory hand-painting lampshades, where he was recognized for his talent and encouraged to go to art school. He enrolled at the Cincinnati Art Academy in 1905 and remained there until 1912, studying under Vincent Nowottny and Frank Duveneck. In 1915, he obtained a part-time teaching job at the Beechwood School near Philadelphia, which enabled him to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
Studying at the Academy from 1915-1918, Nuse's talents were recognized and he won all of the major student awards: the Toppan and Thouron Prizes in 1918, and two Cresson Traveling Scholarships, which he used to travel to Europe.
During this time, he moved his growing family to a farm in rural Bucks County. Between 1919 and 1923 he created many large canvasses of figures in the landscape, focusing on farm life, and painting his children and family mostly in outdoor settings.
In 1925, Nuse was offered a teaching position at PAFA, where he taught drawing and painting, life, and portrait classes until 1954. At this time the Nuse family moved to Rushland, Pennsylvania.
Although Roy Nuse lived in Bucks County most of his life, he shied away from being part of the "New Hope School". He knew many of the artists in the group, but preferred to keep to himself and his family. He studied under Daniel Garber at PAFA, and later was his colleague. The two men admired each other's work, and corresponded. When Garber died, he had a Nuse painting given to him by the artist in his collection.
Early in his career, Nuse exhibited works in juried, national competitions, and had work accepted in the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. However in the 1930's as the popularity of Modernism grew, his work was rejected and he stopped applying. He became embittered toward the art world that seemed disinterested in representational artists. He would not have anything to do with dealers either, preferring to sell his work himself.
In 1954, Nuse chose to retire from the Academy because of philosophical issues, even though his students begged him not to. He continued to teach privately at his home.
Nuse's work is in the permanent collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Swarthmore College, Thomas Jefferson University, the James A. Michener Art Museum, and Moravian College.to

1927 Carmel by the Sea - Beach, California Coastline - Oil on Linen
Seascape oil painting of the Carmel coastline by Charles Henry Harmon (American, 1859-1936). Vibrant blue Pacific waves crash along Carmels white sands, with a walk way on the cliffs above. A lush green sycamore tree is seen to the left, beyond the cliffs. Vibrant greenery is seen on either side of the walkway, depicting colors of greens, yellows, and browns.
Signed "Charles Harmon 1927" lower left.
Charles Henry Harmon was born on December 23, 1859 in Mansfield, Ohio. He moved to San Jose, California with his family in 1874 and at an early age was apprenticed to local portrait painter Louis Lussier. He later spent one year working in a local photography studio re-touching negatives. His youth was spent visiting the art galleries of San Francisco and, with no formal training, he began sketching and painting in 1883 in the beautiful Santa Clara Valley. He painted many landscapes of that area and made trips to the remotest parts of the Sierra and the Monterey Peninsula where he painted many coastal scenes. He began exhibiting in San Jose in the 1880s.
By the turn of the century, his works were handled exclusively by Gump's and he was recognized as one of California's foremost painters. In 1905 he established a studio in Denver and for seven years concentrated on the rugged landscape of the Rocky Mountains. While there, the Santa Fe, Western Pacific, and Colorado, Midland railroads commissioned him to paint scenes along their routes. After his time in Colorado, he returned to San Jose where he remained for the rest of his life. Harmon died there on October 14, 1936 and is buried in Oak Hill...

William Henry Blackman (American, b. 1930) was born in San Diego, CA in 1930. He spent most of his early years in West Los Angeles. Blackman began painting at age 12. In high school he majored in art so he could experiment with various mediums to find ways to interpret his ideas. In December of 1948 he joined the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. He studied at Woodbury College where he learned advertising and graphic arts.
In 1960 he bought a home with his wife Shirley in the San Fernando Valley and worked as an advertising manager. His position put him in contact with art directors and they would lunch together and then visit various art galleries in the area. He began oil painting again as a hobby.
In 1964 he made an important contact through an associate at his agency. This person was a vice-president at Aaron Brothers Galleries and purchased paintings for them. They had showrooms in various major cities and sold original framed paintings to art galleries and furniture stores. He said they could possibly sell some of his seascapes so Bill began painting in his spare time. Gradually, they sold more than he could produce so Bill made the decision to leave the advertising business and devote his time to painting. Note: the original Aaron Brothers Art Galleries Certificate included with the painting.
In 1965 the Blackman's moved to Thousand Oaks, California. He began his career as a fine artist and to this day resides in Thousand Oaks. He contracted with Aaron Brothers to be his exclusive agents and began specializing in seascapes. After a few years he added landscapes and some other subjects. Bluebonnet landscapes...
