Original World War 1 vintage poster: Food Will Wn the War. Arhival linen backed. PRINTER: Rusling Wood Litho., New York Bright and in good condition. There is some marks down the left side of the poster, possible ink from when the poster was printed. This poster calls on immigrants to do their part in the war effort. It depicts recent immigrants standing near a sailing ship with the Statue of Liberty and a rainbow stretched across the New York City skyline in the background. This print was made for the American Abstract Artists Portfolio, 1937. All the images were lithographs made on zinc plates. Usually they were signed in the image -- on the plate, as this one is. As a group they explored abstraction in the 1930s, while maintaining their individual styles. The plan was to make an edition of 500 portfolios although it seems highly unlikely that this was accomplished. Ibram Lassaw (1913-2003) was primarily known for his sculpture. Billy DeVorss (1908 – 1985) was a self-taught illustration artist who started his commercial career in 1933. He was well known throughout his career for the voluptuous figures and attractive faces of his images. This poster is one of those great pin-up style images created by DeVorss. Alone among the pin-up artists in being entirely self-taught, Billy De Vorss sold his first three published pin-ups to the Louis F. Dow Calendar Company in St. Paul in about 1933. Until that time, he had been working as a teller in a bank in St. Joseph, Missouri. There, he met the stunning woman Glenna, who became his wife and first official model.
