Steve Schapiro More Furniture and Collectibles

American, 1934-2022
A prolific photographer and photojournalist, Steve Schapiro has covered major historical events and captured seminal moments, from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1963 march in Selma and Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign, to Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick in The Factory. “It was an incredible time to be a photojournalist, because there was more of an emotional flow—an ability to do more emotional pictures that captured the spirit of a person,” Schapiro has said of working during the ’60s and ’70s. He credits Henri Cartier-Bresson as a major influence on his work, as well as his former teacher W. Eugene Smith. Among the many politicians and celebrities he has photographed are Mia Farrow, Martin Scorcese, and Barbara Streisand.

Barbra Streisand by Steve Schapiro and Lawrence Schiller
By Lawrence Schiller, Steve Schapiro
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Pitch perfect. From Funny Girl to a Star is Born, the meteoric rise of Barbra Streisand. In 1970 Barbra Streisand published a story in Life magazine titled "Who Am I Anyway?" It was the very question two leading photojournalists of the day—Steve Schapiro and Lawrence Schiller—were also asking as they photographed her during her first five years in Hollywood, working to get beneath the veneer and capture "the real Barbra." Brimming with photographs—over half of which have never been published before—and stories behind the shots from Schapiro and Schiller, this is a must-have collection for any Streisand fan. All the best movies of Streisand's first Hollywood decade are here: Funny Girl, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, The Way We Were, The Owl and the Pussycat...

'Taxi Driver' Original Vintage Movie Poster, Australian, 1976
By Guy Peelleart
Located in Devon, GB
Set amidst the moral decay of New York City following the Vietnam War and Watergate scandal, Martin Scorsese's 1976 psychological thriller "Taxi Driver" starred Robert De Niro as a lonely and disturbed anti-hero cab driver and war vet growing increasingly alienated and unhinged as his dreams of cleaning up the corrupt and sleazy city lead him down a path of violence, plotting to assassinate both a presidential candidate and the pimp of an underage prostitute, played by a 12 year old Jodie Foster. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, it was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor for De Niro and Best Supporting Actor for Foster. De Niro's "You talkin' to me?" scene, where he imagines a confrontation in front of a mirror, gave us one of the most iconic quotes in movie history. This Australian Daybill poster features the same atmospheric Guy Peellaert...

Steve Schapiro, Andy Warhol & Friends, Signed, Limited Edition Book
By Andy Warhol, Steve Schapiro, TASCHEN

Pop Life. Pictures of Andy Warhol by Steve Schapiro. In 1965, Steve Schapiro started documenting Andy Warhol for Life magazine: Warhol was cementing a reputation as an important Pop artist who drew his inspiration from popular culture and commercial objects. With his sunglasses, blond wig, and bland public utterances, Warhol was enigmatic, charismatic, intensely ambitious, and aware that to become a star, you needed the presence of people to document your ascent. Schapiro, also ambitious and hardworking, who in his own words “kept quiet and smiled a lot,” was an ideal witness to Warhol’s relentless rise from cult New York artist to 20th-century icon. Ironically, Life never published the story, so many of these images are seen here for the first time, scanned from negatives found deep in Schapiro’s archive. Between 1965 and 1966, Warhol was at his creative peak. In this period, Warhol turned his life into art and conceived the “Andy Warhol persona”—arguably his greatest masterpiece. Schapiro busily photographed Warhol...
