Susan Derges Prints and Multiples
British, b. 1955
Susan Derges lives and works on the west coast of England near Dartmoor in Devon. She is one of the pioneers of the largely British movement (along with Adam Fuss, Christopher Bucklow, and Garry Fabian Miler) who in the 1980s and 1990s revived the art of the photogram taking it to new and unexpected places with a freshness of scale, color, and concept. This will be the Danziger Gallery’s third show of Susan Derges’ photographs.
Recently, Derges began working in the studio combining analog and digital techniques to create new forms, colors, and perspectives hitherto impossible to capture. Her practice reflects the work of the earliest practitioners of photography but is contemporary in its experimentation and awareness of new technical, conceptual, and environmental issues. Derges’ newest works, which will be receiving their first American showing, largely use the symbols of gates and arches to explore themes of reflection, memory, and the flow of time.
As Derges melds internal experience with the external landscape, the viewer is faced with images of water, bridges, and gates that could be familiar everyday sights but are not quite what they seem. Reflections falling onto the water's surface, views from its underside, shadows thrown across the ripples of a brook all give rise to an experience similar to that of the dream state and at the same time question the apparent solidity of our perceptions. With a control of color made possible by the latest photographic technology, Derges’ new works meld the constructed and the observed into a new chapter both for her work and for the medium.
Susan Derges' work is in the collection of museums around the world including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and The Hara Art Museum, Tokyo.to

although it is possible to acquire (small size) single page offset prints from the book "A Portfolio of Landscapes and Figures" (published by Steidl) in the secondary market, the artist studio strongly dissuades collectors from purchasing these single page prints outside of the context and authenticity of the complete portfolio.
About the artist:
Massimo Vitali was born in Como, Italy, in 1944.
He studied photography at the London College of Printing, in the 1970s initially working as a photojournalist, but at the beginning of the 80s a growing mistrust in the belief that photography had an absolute capacity to reproduce the subtleties of reality led to a change in his career path.
Vitali worked in cinematography for film and television before beginning a fine art practice in 1995.
Over the next two decades, he would gain recognition for his highly detailed, epic-scale panoramas — sociopolitical observations of the natural habitat of humankind at leisure. Vitali’s iconic series of beach panoramas, captured from a distance with an elevated large-format camera platform, began in the light of drastic political changes in Italy.
Drawing inspiration from Renaissance and Old Flemish masters, in which the central space is fully exploited and the urban or natural landscape becomes the background, Vitali’s photographs grasp the viewer by capturing highly detailed observances of the recreational habitats of modern civilization.
Vitali’s work has been collected in six monographs: Beach and Disco, Natural Habitats, Landscapes With Figures, Swimming Pools, Short Stories and Entering A New World.
Additionally, his work is represented in the world’s major museums, including the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, the Fond National Art Contemporaine in Paris, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, the Fondation Cartier in Paris and the Museo Luigi Pecci in Prato.
Massimo Vitali lives and works in Lucca (Italy) and in Berlin (Germany).

WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE?
The cyanotype (a.k.a. sun-print) process is one of the oldest in the history of photography, dating back to the 1840's.
Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun.
Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Finally, the print is washed and fixed with water to stop the reaction and prevent fading.
What you get is an amazing, royal blue image...
