Sydney Horne Shepherd Figurative Drawings and Watercolors
British, 1909-1993
Sydney Horne Shepherd was born in Dundee in 1909 and educated at Harris Academy. He attended Dundee School of Art from 1924–26 and then Glasgow School of Art where, in 1927, he won a traveling scholarship and prizes for portrait and landscape. In 1929, Shepherd won a post-diploma scholarship and became an Assistant Art Teacher at the Glasgow Art School. A series of portrait commissions took him to London where, in 1937, he became a lecturer at Shoreditch Training College and, during the war, a draughtsman at the Napiers Aircraft Factory. Shepherd continued to paint and, in 1947, was appointed as the Senior Art Lecturer at Shoreditch in 1947, Shepherd remained at Shoreditch until 1954 when he was appointed to teaching posts at St. Martin’s School of Art and at the St John Cass School of Art before retiring in 1974. Shepherd exhibited widely and with success, with work is held in many private and public collections including McManus Galleries, Dundee.

Castro’s oeuvre is strongly divided between his photomontage assemblies and watercolor paintings: the prior is marked by the labor-intensive deconstruction of portrait photographs and the latter, by the seemingly frenzied recreation of a past encounter rendered in the drips and scribbles of paint and ink. This work clearly has homosexual overtones which in the mid-'40s was as daring as showing nudity. I am not sure if this was the artist's intention but the salesgirl and the model look identical and she signs it twice Shermond. Added to this is a strobe light effect where the model's image is partly replicated giving the impression of 2 figures. She's lost in thought pondering the notion of removing the bows and seeing the consequences. Meanwhile, the sales girls ( perhaps her alta ego - perhaps an admirer ) eggs her on.
