Thomas Newman Lighting

American

Thomas Newman’s wood furniture and lighting were described by Popular Woodworking magazine as “cutting-edge” and “original, elegant and visually stunning.” He combines traditional woodworking techniques with sophisticated technology, resulting in modern, captivating designs.

In his youth, Newman enjoyed building things in his father’s basement workshop. He later studied art history at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. A self-taught woodworker, Newman began his career in the 1970s restoring antique furniture. He grew a reputation for his exceptional finishes, a skill he learned from author and finishing expert George Frank, becoming known as one of New York City’s top finishers.

By the late 1970s, Newman had developed an interest in furniture design. He was inspired by American woodworker and architect George Nakashima. Through Thomas Newman Studio, his first successful project was designing and building high-end tables for New York’s Howard Kaplan showroom. This led to collaborations with influential designers, including Anthony Baratta and William Diamond.

In 2001, Russian designer Vladimir Krasnogorov joined Thomas Newman Studio, becoming its principal designer of sculptural, carved-wood chairs, coffee tables, stools and dining room tables and sets. While many pieces are made from traditional hardwoods like walnut and tiger maple, Newman and Krasnogorov also specialize in using 1,200-year-old bog oak, such as for their striking console tables, cabinets and geometric wall decorations.

Throughout his 50-year career, Newman’s furniture has been sourced by nearly every major design firm in New York City and featured in numerous prestigious publications, such as Wallpaper* magazine’s “Best of 2019” issue.

Thomas Newman Studio, "Novios", Floor Lamp
By Thomas Newman
Located in Los Angeles, CA
The Spanish word Novios translates broadly as “a couple.” In the natural world, a coupling of one plus one often seems to add up to more than two. Beyond the obvious romantic meaning, we witness in nature numerous examples of an attraction which joins individuals together in a common purpose for a larger good. As such, coupling is a life-giving force that is basic to the wondrous complexity and beauty of our natural environment. The Novios lamp is an organically inspired, abstract symbol...

"Watiya Juta" is the name of the Australian species of the Acacia tree. Aboriginal peoples have used the design motif – the inspiration for our chandelier - for thousands of years as a symbol for this tree. The Acacia has been their source of wood used for spear shafts. As an abstract symbol it has deep spiritual meaning for the Aboriginal Australians...

Thomas Newman Studio, "Pearl", Chandelier, 2019
By Vladimir Krasnogorov, Thomas Newman
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Please note that the Pearl Chandelier's dimensions do not include the ceiling suspension arm length. Please inquire for more details on fixture dimensions with our sales team. The pearl chandelier is clearly inspired by organic forms, lily pads, oyster shells, plant tendrils, but at the same time is a rationally conceived, architectural form that is driven by the material of its construction: wood. Woodworkers must work within the discipline imposed by the strengths and limitations of their medium. Like the triangulated trusses of a timber form barn, the carved arms and supports are shaped to carry their weight, and function as members of a well-balanced wooden structure. Carving of this quality declined with the passing of the great masters of Art Nouveau, Gaudi, Majorelle, Guimard, etc. The pearl is a modern reinvention of this tradition one hundred years later. The furniture and lighting of Thomas Newman Studio...
