Timur Zagirov, an emerging artist from Pskov, Russia, creates unusual artworks inspired by the most significant paintings in history. Zagirov’s works are constructed from square wooden blocks that create a mesmerizing textured surface. The image perception changes depending on the viewer's distance from the piece.
The tradition to adorn walls with decorative wooden artworks comes from the depths of centuries. They make the interior warm and cozy, they are beautiful and unusual, and they are difficult to replicate twice.
Young artist Timur Zagirov gained recognition and interest in his works in Russia and abroad after his reproduction of Vincent Van Gogh’s 1889 self-portrait. The well-known painting appeared to viewers in a new way: split into many wood blocks with different shapes, different saw angles, colors, and placing in the frame which gave this unusual pixelization effect, an entertaining game of light and shadows.
Due to the peculiarities of Zagirov's technique, his creative process is quite long and difficult from idea to implementation. He pre-visualizes each image and carefully selects main tones. The most time-consuming part is the preparation of each individual building element of the artwork. The artist chops and shapes wood blocks by hand then polishes and paints each element individually. Color accuracy and coating stability are very important for the final result. To protect his technique, the artist keeps the paint composition in secret.
Encouraged by his first successful experience, the talented artist continues working in the same technique creating many more beautiful wooden pieces inspired by world-famous paintings. And since the original works of art were known to almost everyone, their reimagined versions instantly responded to the audience.to
