Wallace Bassford Art

American, 1900-1998

Wallace Bassford was an American painter and illustrator, born in 1900 in Saint Louis, Missouri. He attended the Saint Louis School of Fine Art and was a member of St. Louis Artists' Guild. He also lived in New York City, Provincetown, Massachusetts and Palm Beach. His works were exhibited at galleries and museums across the United State including the Saint Louis Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art. Bassford was known particularly for his floral still lifes and female portrait figures. Wallace Bassford died in 1998.

Bassford was the son of a prominent St. Louis newspaperman, Homer Bassford. He attended Wyman School, then McKinley High School in St. Louis. In 1918 he enrolled at Hall's West Point School in Columbia, MO in preparation for entering the Naval Academy at Annapolis, but the end of World War I ended his military aspirations. He attended classes at the School of Fine Arts of Washington University in St. Louis in 1919-1920, where he credited Edmund Wuerpel and Fred Green Carpenter for their inspirational guidance.
