An excellent, fine and impressive antique Georgian English sterling silver candle snuffer / pen tray; an addition to our 18th century silverware collection. This exceptional antique Georgian sterling silver candle snuffer tray has a navette shaped form. The surface of this antique silver snuffer/pen tray is ornamented with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting a centaur regardant holding and arrow on a bended bow, above the bright cut engraved initials 'WIL'. The outer circumference of the surface is encompassed with an undulating wriggle work decorated border. The raised rounded sides of the tray are embellished with pierced decorated urn designs conjoined by suspended bright cut engraved festoon ornamentation further accented with undulating pin struck decoration. The tray is further embellished with an applied bead decorated border to the rim. Either end of the tray incorporates an impressive pierced and applied scrolling leaf decorated handle accented with a pendant drop design to the inner surface. This exceptional tray was crafted by the London silversmith William Plummer who is known for his work with pierced decoration. He had already been serving as Prince Regent since 5 February 1811, during his father's final mental illness. George IV was the eldest child of King George III and Queen Charlotte. He led an extravagant lifestyle that contributed to the fashions of the Regency era. He was a patron of new forms of leisure, style and taste. He commissioned John Nash to build the Royal Pavilion in Brighton and remodel Buckingham Palace, and commissioned Jeffry Wyatville to rebuild Windsor Castle. George's charm and culture earned him the title "the first gentleman of England", but his dissolute way of life and poor relationships with his parents and his wife, Caroline of Brunswick, earned him the contempt of the people and dimmed the prestige of the monarchy.
