Abstract geometric painting with a neutral palette of black, gold, and beige with sky blue accents against a cream colored, off white acrylic wash background "Black, Gold, and Beige Plan" made by Hudson Valley artists, Donise English, in 2022 Graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic painting on vellum 24 x 18 inches unframed, 31 x 25 x 1.5 with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and simple black moulding Signed, verso Excellent condition and ready to hang This abstract geometric painting on vellum was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a neutral toned background of acrylic wash. A grid of box-like patterns in black, gold, beige and sky blue line work are stacked to create an irregular shape or an "imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on vellum is complemented by a simple black frame with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and wire backing. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang. About the artist: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. A central checkerboard formation floats over a ground of pastel color or washes of grey or cream. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. The artist recently retired from her decades career teaching at Marist College and is now devoted full time to her art making. Artist Statement: My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Abstract mixed media drawing of blue, black and grey clouds on vintage book pages 'Under Scattered Clouds' by Louise Laplante chalk on vintage collaged book pages. Artwork measures 26 x 40 inches unframed 30 x 43 inches in light wood frame This dreamy, whimsical drawing of fluffy light blue clouds was created by Louise Laplante in 2019. The vivid silhouette of clouds are suspended in space, drifting against a background of an early 20th century book of fables. Illustrations on the page include a hot air balloon, a rocking horse, a pheasant. In certain segments the stenciled images are delicately brushed over with a thin wisp of chalk which adds a delicate textured effect to the drawing. About the artist: Interested in blending the old world with the new, mixed media artist Louise Laplante combines her original images with ephemera of the past, enticing a conversation about it’s “relevancy to the present.” Her compositions begin with vintage book pages, personal handwritten letters, sheet music, or instruction from old guides on etiquette or science. While the text itself is weighted with reference to a particular subject, the visual of the typed or handwritten words and printed illustrations establish a unique pattern. These layered backgrounds are superimposed with opaque charcoal drawings that are inspired by the themes read between the lines. Most recently, the artist has opted for larger scale work, combining multiple sheets of vintage paper to expand her unique motifs. Paint is not heavily built up upon the surface but it certainly exhibits a tactile quality which is characteristic of the artist's aesthetic. English's work celebrates the quirky, unexpected qualities of shapes and colors. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Graphic abstract painting on paper in in complementary hues of red-orange, dark teal and yellow "Duo" by Jenny Kemp, painted in 2020 acrylic on linen over panel 14 x 11 inches Signed, verso Jenny Kemp’s abstract paintings are inspired by the artist’s desire to represent unseen phenomenon. With intricate and calculated line-work, the artist builds parallel layers against opaque backgrounds, while shifts in color and shape call attention to organic forms that give reference to the human body or atomic structures. Precise lines in light green arc over a layer of opaque moss green before colliding with forms of bright red-orange. A serene layer of dark teal complements these contrasting colliding forms, allowing a visual reprieve. The gouache painting on paper is complimented with a light wood frame, protected by non-glare glass. Wire is installed on the back for seamless hanging. About the artist: Jenny Kemp received a BS in Art from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and an MFA in Painting from the University at Albany. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country, most recently at Gold/Scopophilia* in Montclair, NJ and the Mandeville Gallery at Union College in Schenectady, NY. She has been featured in publications such as 100 Painters of Tomorrow published by Thames & Hudson, New American Paintings, The Huffington Post, Seattle’s City Arts, New York Times, and The New England Review.
