An Autumn Evening Study, 1901 (En höstkvällstudie, 1901)
By Fritz Lindström
Located in Stockholm, SE
This landscape painting by Swedish artist Fritz Lindström captures the tranquility of the Stockholm archipelago. "An Autumn Evening Study, 1901" is a stunning portrayal of a rural scene at dusk. The painting's delicate pink and purple sky envelops the landscape in a soft glow, hinting at the transition from day to night. In the middle ground, a farmer with his horse can be seen plowing a field, adding a narrative element to this peaceful scene. This work is one of several paintings Lindström created during this period, following his time in France and prior to joining the Rackstad group in 1903.
BIOGRAPHY
Fritz Lindström started his artistic journey as an apprentice in decorative painting under Carl Grabow, where he met fellow artist Björn Ahlgrensson. He later studied at the Artists' Association School in Stockholm with Richard Bergh (1892–1894 and 1895–1896) and at Valand Art School in Gothenburg under Carl Larsson (1894–1895). His studies continued in Copenhagen and Paris from 1897 to 1899.
In 1900, Lindström returned to Sweden, drawn to Värmland by his friend and brother-in-law Björn Ahlgrensson. From 1903 onwards, he became part of the Rackstad group—a community of artists who saw the countryside as an ideal setting for artistic and spiritual work. This belief resonated with Lindström, and he remained dedicated to this lifestyle for over fifty years, living and working by Lake Racken.
Lindström's early artistic focus was on the challenging art of human studies, which piqued his interest. Despite financial struggles and difficulty selling his paintings, he gained recognition mainly for his portraits, known for their well-constructed composition and deep psychological insight. Portrait painting became crucial for his financial stability. Interest in his landscape paintings grew when the director of the National Museum happened upon his landscapes during an exhibition opening...

Sunset over the Swedish Bohuslän Coast
Located in Stockholm, SE
This painting by Anders Wahlgren, a Swedish painter, depicts a serene coastal landscape at sunset, likely set in the Bohuslän region of Sweden. The image is bathed in the warm, glowing hues of the setting sun, reflecting off the calm waters. A lone seagull perches on a rock in the bottom right corner, adding a subtle touch of life to the tranquil scene.
Anders Nils Henrik Wahlgren, born on February 15, 1861, in Lund, Sweden, was not only a skilled artist but also a forest science researcher. His artistic journey began early in his life, studying under the guidance of academic drawing master Axel Hjalmar Lindqvist in Lund. Later, during his time at the Forest Institute, he received artistic training from Anders Kallenberg. His travels for forestry studies led him to take a significant break in 1891, where he studied art in Brittany and Paris, particularly within a circle of Swedish painters and at a Scandinavian art school led by Richard Hall...

Shepherd with Sheep, Cows and a Goat in a Landscape by Jan Frans Soolmaker
Located in Stockholm, SE
This painting depicts a pastoral scene that is attributed to the artist Jan Frans Soolmaker, an artist known for his Italianate landscapes and scenes that often feature equestrian and Arcadian elements. The painting is not signed but is attributed to Soolmaker, relating it to a known signed work by the artist that was sold at Sotheby’s London in 1999.
The scene is suffused with the warm glow of a setting or rising sun, casting a soft light that is characteristic of Soolmaker’s landscapes. It shows a shepherd guiding a group of cattle across a shallow stream, with the animals taking center stage in the composition. The animals are rendered with careful attention to their forms and the play of light on their bodies, which is a hallmark of Soolmaker's work. The landscape is composed of a rocky terrain with trees and shrubbery, creating a sense of depth and natural beauty that invites the viewer to explore the scene further.
The background suggests a vast, open landscape with distant mountains, which adds to the Italianate feel of the painting. The sky is dramatic, with clouds catching the light of the sun, contributing to the overall serene yet dynamic atmosphere of the work.
The provenance of the painting is notable, having been in the possession of significant historical figures such as Swedish Prince Fredrik Adolf, and later The collection of Pär Ulmgren, The collection of Gösta Stenman, and Engineer and politician Gustaf Henry Hansson.
Potential buyers have the option of choosing between a newly made gold frame or an older brown frame, which allows for personalization in how the work is presented.
Soolmaker’s work is often compared to that of Dutch painter Nicolaes Berchem, whose style he emulated. Soolmaker's landscapes reflect a similar sensitivity to light and composition, making his works sought after for their beauty and historical significance. Despite the smaller body of work left by Soolmaker, due to his short career, his paintings are valued for their craftsmanship and the legacy of the artist’s brief but impactful contribution to the Dutch Italianate landscape genre.

European Goldfinches, Taormina, By Swedish Artist Lindorm Liljefors
Located in Stockholm, SE
This exquisite painting by Lindorm Liljefors, the talented Swedish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor, is a testament to his profound connection with nature and his artistic lineage. Educated at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm from 1928 to 1934, under the tutelage of Alfred Bergström and Wilhelm Smith, he honed his skills before embarking on study trips to France and Italy in 1934.
Our painting "Goldfinches, Taormina" showcases a serene natural landscape, inspired by the picturesque scenery of Taormina, it captures the essence of Taormina's natural beauty, combining it with Liljefors' unique artistic perspective. Ant Battle Oil Sketch by Eugen Kask, Oil on Panel, Signed, 1978
Located in Stockholm, SE
The painting in question captures the dynamic energy of a moment seemingly frozen in time—an oil sketch by Eugen Kask featuring two ants engaged in an intense wrestling match. Kask’s approach to this piece is fluid and spontaneous, with broad, swift strokes that lend an air of immediacy to the scene. Much of the canvas remains untouched, its raw state highlighting the areas where Kask chose to concentrate his efforts, thus drawing the viewer's gaze directly to the central action of the ants. This decision to leave the background undefined gives the work a sense of incompleteness, a characteristic that is often celebrated in studies and sketches for its authenticity and connection to the artist's initial spark of inspiration.
Eugen Kask, born on January 18, 1918, in Kiev and passed away on May 11, 1998, in Vimmerby, was an Estonian-Swedish painter of diverse talents. A descendant of an architectural lineage, with his father Kristjan Kask and his own background in architecture and fine arts, Kask brought a structural eye to his compositions. His life, marked by the upheaval of wartime displacement, led him to Sweden where his contributions to art continued to flourish through exhibitions and group showcases. His work spans a variety of subjects from pastoral landscapes to intimate animal studies...

Torero and Bull bullfighter bullfighting oil painting
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Torero and Bull
Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez (1919-1986)
Technique: Oil on canvas mounted on board
Dimensions: 18.9 x 15 inches
Framing: Unframed
Art Movement: Costumbrismo, Figurative Expressionism
Theme: Bullfighting
Date of Creation: Second half of the 20th century
DESCRIPTION
The painting Torero and Bull depicts a classic bullfighting scene, where a matador, elegantly dressed in a golden and violet traje de luces, performs a pass with the cape while the bull, wounded with banderillas, bows toward the ground. The composition conveys dynamism and tension, emphasizing the drama of the moment with loose and expressive brushstrokes.
The background is rendered in warm, diffused tones, contrasting with the deep black of the bull and the vivid hues of the cape. The thick brushwork and vibrant oil application enhance the sense of movement and emotion in the scene, a distinctive feature of Tuser Vázquez’s bullfighting paintings.
ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY
José María Tuser Vázquez (Barcelona, 1919 - 1986) was a Spanish painter specializing in bullfighting themes. He trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Barcelona, where he developed a strong foundation in drawing and painting. From 1947 onwards, he dedicated his artistic production to tauromaquia, creating posters, illustrations, and paintings that captured the intensity of the bullfighting spectacle.
He was a regular contributor to the magazine El Ruedo and designed a series of postcards featuring traditional Spanish costumes for Editorial Artigas in the 1940s. His work has been auctioned numerous times and is highly valued by collectors of bullfighting art...
