Egyptian Motif Pair of Regency Candleholders by George Penton English circa 1808
By George Penton
Located in Incline Village, NV
Rare pair of Regency bronze candleholders from the London, England workshop of George Penton on New Street Fetter Lane. He was well known and recognized by both British and American connoisseurs of fine art during the late 18th and early 19th century. These Regency candleholders are marked and embossed "Published by G. Penton
Jan.Y 1 1808". The Egyptian motif, the sphinx like figures, and recumbent lion at the base, all indicate that Penton was most certainly influenced by Thomas Hope and his 1807 publication "Household Furniture and Interior Decoration". The ornate and detailed appointments; from the multiple medallions adorning the candle cups, rope and tassel design to the drip holders, to the fine quality representation of the sphinx, lion, and mask on the base, with floral leaf pattern to the perimeter, all are emblematic of fine quality Regency period household decorations. These are a unique and beautiful pair of Regency candleholders from an important maker and an impressive collection (see provenance below). Perfect for the discerning collector of 18th and 19th century antiques.
The condition is outstanding and all original with no restoration.
Dimensions: 10 3/4" high x 3" wide x 4 1/2" deep
George Penton's work can also be found at St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina where a brass chandelier with provisions for holding 45 candles still hangs. It is the oldest of these types of church chandeliers in America, and is referenced in an article in a May 18th, 1907 issue of The Atheneum. It was installed in 1804; information regarding this can also be found in "Written Historic and Descriptive Data, South Carolina, St. Michael's Church" prepared June 27th, 1941.
Provenance: The Millicent A. Rogers Collection (See underside of candle holder image): Millicent Rogers (1902-1953). Noted Socialite, Fashion Icon, and Art Collector. Standard Oil Heiress and granddaughter to Henry Rogers...

German Tinplate Clockwork Wind Up Toy By Ernest Paul Lehman "Quack Quack" C 1903
By E.P. Lehman Co.
Located in Incline Village, NV
This is a very popular Lehman wind up toy; emblematic of "whimsy" typical of Ernest Paul Lehman whose toy company opened in Brandenburg, Germany in 1881.. The action portrays a mama duck walking along with her three baby chicks in tow being carried in a basket from behind. The toy is nicely lithographed with a greenish yellow basket; light and dark green baby chicks, and the mother duck with yellow green features and an orange and white undercoat. The underneath of the basket is filled with markings documenting the genesis of the toy. "Paak Paak" German for "Quack Quack": are clearly spelled out along with "Lehman" "Pat. U.S.A. March 12, 1903". Printed on the side #645 indicating the catalogue number (see image).
To operate:
wind up the attached clockwork key on the right side; release while still in your hand to see what happens; wind up some more and then gently place on the floor to watch the baby chicks bob up and down as mama pulls them forward. Very few examples are intact---legs usually absent and mechanisms broken, and examples are incomplete because of rough play.
This example is completely original with no restoration of any kind and no touch up to the lovely surface.
The toy is catalogued as "EPL #645" and documented on page 59 and 60 of the book "Lehman Toys" by Jurgen & Marianne Cieslik, published in 1982.
This would be a wonderful addition for the discerning collector of antiques children...

Child' Wind Up Toy "Crawling Beetle" by The Lehman Toy Co. Germany, Circa 1900
By E.P. Lehman Co.
Located in Incline Village, NV
Listed as #431 in the Lehman catalogues this wonderful vintage children's wind up toy, manufactured by the prestigious and iconic Lehman Toy Company of Germany; was patented in 1895 (see image--markings under wing ). The toy was made for over 25 years and was quite popular. When wound up using the underside attached clockwork( key (see attached movie) the toy depicts the six legged beetle crawling across the floor by moving it's legs back and forth while flapping it's wings in the air. All the markings "Pat. U.S.A." "D.R.G.M." "Pat April 23, 1895" "Lehman" are clearly marked under the wing (see image). It is lithographed and hand painted in colors of bluish green wings, a red and white head, yellow and black under wings, with red and blackish green legs.
This particular example is completely original ,which is highly unusual for this toy as a search of other examples would reveal that one or several of the legs are typically lacking, or repaired, as are the fragile wings as well. There is no restoration and no touch up paint of any kind. to this toy. It is original in every respect.
The toy is catalogued as "EPL #431" and documented on page 59 and 60 of the book "Lehman Toys" by Jurgen & Marianne Cieslik, published in 1982.

Nathaniel Currier Lithograph "May Morning" American Country Life Series C. 1855
By Currier & Ives
Located in Incline Village, NV
This lithograph portrays a pleasant scene of a man in a top hat atop a handsome dark horse, with a boy riding a white horse (presumably father and son) in front of a country estate, while women gather as they water flowers, and children play with a lamb in the foreground. A man plows a field; while a horse is being groomed near the stable in the background. Afar and to the right is the sea dotted with ships here and there. The folio is mounted on cardboard and set in the matte.
It is in very good all original condition; and housed and professionally mounted in a fine quality and attractive bird's eye maple wooden frame with preservation backing and frontal protective glass (important when dealing with 170 year old lithographs); it is the rare and desirable Currier large folio sheet example in fine original color. There is some toning and slight fading,
The larger folios are more rare because they appealed to the wealthier sector of the population and were more expensive, thus fewer were made, albeit, knowing their more discerning customer base, there was more attention given to detail; hand coloring, and quality for example. This example has been framed and housed in museum quality conservation backing for over 80 years. I have had it professionally taken apart and I inspected the folio visually, and examined it with a black light and loop; as a result, I guarantee and can attest to the accuracy of my description of the lithograph. I then had the folio professionally remounted in their original frame with an upgraded preservation backing (see images of original folios out of frame and for confirmation of inspection). This lithograph has no tears, no touch up paint, and no glued or taped repairs.
This is one of the four iconic and highly desirable set of lithographs made by Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) dated 1855 from the American Country Life series. They are named;
Spring "May Morning";
Summer "Summer Evening";
Fall ""October Afternoon"; and
Winter "Pleasures of Winter".
The lithograph was produced from the painting of well known artist Frances (Fanny) Flora (Bond Palmer (1812-1876). She painted typical American scenes of daily American life that were used by Currier for years to come. She was an accomplished artist by the time she migrated to the United States from England, and Currier commissioned her to do the country scenes for this series. Each of the original images are toned lithographs with applied hand painted watercolor.
The lithograph reflects an affluent life style, showcasing grandiose homes and glamorizing the rural way of living as urban areas became more densely populated with the tidal wave and arrival of immigrants. Nathaniel Currier began his lithograph business in 1835 with hand colored images portraying outdoor panoramic, historical, pastoral, and landmark scenes and events, with which the middle class and the wealthy sought to decorate their houses. James Ives (1824-1895) was his accountant) and would join him later in 1857 to help run the business.
The hand painted lithograph is embellished with script text in the bottom margin of the folio "Entered according to art of congress in the year 1855 by N. Currier in the clerk's office of the southern district of N.Y."

This lithograph has no tears, no touch up paint, and no glued or taped repairs.
This is one of the four iconic and highly desirable set of lithographs made by Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) dated 1855 from the American Country Life series. They are named;
Spring "May Morning";
Summer "Summer Evening";

Nathan Currier Lithograph "October Afternoon" American Country Life Series C1855
By Currier & Ives
Located in Incline Village, NV
"October Afternoon" Maintains the appropriate markings along with "New York, Published by N. Currier 152 Nassau Street.
(The firm was located here in lower Manhattan from 1837-1872)
The lithograph illustrates two men and their dog with young son (hunting rifle over shoulder) in tow, returning from the rabbit hunt with their catch being presented to the lady of the house with baby in arms. The gated mansion is in the background while geese float upon the fertile pond in the background.
In addition to the Amon Carter Museum in Dallas, an example of "Pleasures of Winter" is in:
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Bequest of Adele S. Colgate, 1962)
Museum of Fine Arts Boston (Donated by Lee M. Friedman)
The Library of Congress
The Yale University Art Gallery (Gift of Mabel Brady Garvan Collection)
Dimensions: actual= 16 1/2" h x 23 13/16" w
matte= 19 1/2" h x 25 1/4" w
folio= 21 1/4" h x 27 3/4" w
with frame= 26 1/4" h x 32 1/4" w
frame= 1 1/4" burl bird's eye maple
It is in very good all original condition; and housed and professionally mounted in a fine quality and attractive bird's eye maple wooden frame with preservation backing and frontal protective glass (important when dealing with 170 year old lithographs); it is the rare and desirable Currier large folio sheet example in fine original color. There is some slight foxing to the cream border and minor fading (see images),
The larger folios are more rare because they appealed to the wealthier sector of the population and were more expensive, thus fewer were made, albeit, knowing their more discerning customer base, there was more attention given to detail; hand coloring, and quality for example. This example has been framed and housed in museum quality conservation backing for over 80 years. I have had it professionally taken apart and I inspected the folio visually, and examined it with a black light and loop; as a result, I guarantee and can attest to the accuracy of my description of the lithograph. I then had the folio professionally remounted in it's original frame with an upgraded preservation backing (see images of original folios out of frame and for confirmation of inspection). Vintage "Buffalo Pottery" Large Pitcher "Buffalo Hunt" Theme Circa 1912
By Buffalo Pottery
Located in Incline Village, NV
Western United States Native American themed pitcher depicts several Indians on horseback hunting buffalo, thus the name "Buffalo Hunt" stamped on the underneath, along with "Buffalo Pottery" and an image of the buffalo logo in blue (see images). The iconic "Buffalo Pottery Company" became famous for manufacturing pottery for the armed forces and later for national park venues such as Yosemite. The pitcher is completely original with no repairs and no repaints, no chips; it is colored and hand painted in shades of dark to light green with gold "speckled" highlighting; most of the gold is intact (typically wears off}. Labeled "semi-vitreous" underneath indicating post 1910 to 1920 manufacture; embodies a sound and well made piece of pottery that can be used with confidence, or put on display.

Vintage "Dapper Clown" Roly Poly Toy; Scarce. Germany Circa 1915
Located in Incline Village, NV
Vintage hard to find "Rolly Dolly" Toy; unknown German maker, circa 1915; I have named "Dapper Clown"; this is one of the more rare "Rolly Dolly's" (really rare in this condition). Today we call these toys "Roly Poly's". You knock them over and they always "right" themselves and get upright; probably after the 17th C. Japanese "Daruma Dolls" at some level.
I'm not sure of the actual thematic genesis of this character, but the excellent condition, very simply, separates this from any other similar Roly Poly's, Watch the attached video to see how it was played with to better appreciate the condition. 8" high puts it in the "taller" category for this toy.
Made of paper mache, makers of these roly poly's were produced quite prolifically by the same type of German cottage industry that produced Noah...
