Wonderful geometric abstract screen print abstract in black, blue and yellow by Margo Hoff (American, 1912-2008), circa 1980. Titled "Construction Over Yellow Sky" lower left and signed lower right. Unframed. Presented on mat. Image size: 22"H x 30"W. Margo Hoff was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1912—the second oldest of eight children. Stricken with typhoid fever in 1923, she was bedridden for a summer and amused herself by drawing and making paper cutouts. Her formal studies began in high school and continued during two years at the University of Oklahoma, Tulsa. In 1933 she moved to Chicago where she took classes at Hull House, the National Academy of Art and, later, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She remained in Chicago until 1960 and the city’s vibrant mid-century art scene profoundly shaped the first half of her artistic career. Hoff’s Chicago paintings were almost entirely figurative and evidence a classic mid-century modern urbanism informed by Matisse, the Mexican muralists, and other artists of the local milieu. Hoff traveled extensively throughout her life, in the United States, Central and South America, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe. The artist selects certain words and phrases from page 186 to isolate as a poem, and then draws, inks, redacts and paints the rest of the page according to the text. The resulting poem reads "The wounded were coming / men that were scared / I felt the rain in my face / It was getting dark." – Hemingway's novel is a doomed romance between a wounded American soldier and an Italian nurse – note the feminine form on the page, with a "dress" or apron that looks skeletal, bloody and rained upon, all at once. "Last Minute Shopping #2" is a digital print on cotton rag, acid-free paper by generative artist Stephen Boyd. Including the wood frame it measures 24x24". Based on mathematical computation, the artist has programmed thousands of lines into two grid patterns that reveal textured backgrounds, moiré effects and organic shapes that allude to motion and plant growth (among other natural processes). Stephen makes generative art (not AI art) based on Organizing Principle Ratios and Emergent Structure – all of which means the artist is programming coherent visual relationships and compositional structures into every artwork. Simple rules, repeated millions of times, result in hypnotic, beautiful images.
