DETAIL: A most interesting unuusal and characterful mid Century portrait of a man mowing the lawn. The painting initialled lower right for Kenwrothy. John Dalzell Kenworthy ARCA (5 Nov 1858 - 4 Mar 1954) was an internationally acclaimed artist, sculptor and writer who was born at Whitehaven into a prominent West Cumbrian family. JD Kenworthy was a noted Cumberland artist, who lived at Seacroft House, St Bees, a coastal village south of Whitehaven. He painted both portraits and landscapes, in oil and watercolour in the 50 years centred on the turn of the twentieth century. He was an associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy (1914) and he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, as well as at galleries across Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. He travelled to paint in Scotland and France, where he became particularly well known. He also was a keen angler, and wrote a book in 1933 called 'Fisherman's Philosophy', in which he discusses Scottish salmon and loch trout, and fishing on the French Mediterranean coast. Kenworthy's works are held in the public collections of the Beacon Museum and Helena Thompson Museum. JD Kenworthy's portraits include two of 1st World War veterans, AJ Wandless a Master Mariner and Whitehaven war hero Abraham Acton. DETAIL: Painter and teacher, born in London. After Bryanston School he studied at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art with James Bateman and Clive Gardiner, 1937–9, then at the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting, 1939–40, with Ernest Jackson, and drawing at La Grande Chaumière, Paris. During World War II he served in Royal Engineers before transferring to the Camouflage Unit, which included Frederick Gore, Oliver Messel, Roland Penrose and Claude Rogers. Roddon spent part of the war stationed in the Old Assembly Rooms, Norwich, as a camouflage instructor alongside Messel and Penrose. From 1948–50, he taught at Goldsmiths’; from 1960–1 was commissioned to paint The Stations of the Cross and Resurrrection for St Thomas More, Patcham; from 1960–3 moved to Paris; rented Edwin John’s studio in Tite Street for 10 years; and began a series of portraits, sitters including the novelist L P Hartley, composer John Ireland...

DETAIL: Born in Devon, the countryside continues to have an influence on his work, particularly coastal scenes, the moors, and rivers. Richard is an intuitive and spontaneous artist whose work retains the atmosphere of a deep love of the seasons and the locations.Since those early days his paintings have been sold and exhibited in many leading galleries throughout the UK, as well as America, Taiwan, and South Korea, and are held in many private collections. His work has been accepted at the Royal Institute’s (for painters in watercolour) open exhibitions, where he has won awards for best watercolour. He was also invited to participate in the Quingdao International Watercolour Exhibition 2019 where he won an excellent work award. Art Promoters in China exhibit his work and in 2020 he returned to demonstrate and exhibit. Light, texture, and distance are his principal concerns. These elements predominate his subject matter. There is a constant search for new techniques toward those goals. “...For me, painting is a continuum – an exploration. But watercolour is a medium that seems to be always one step ahead”

Notes: Painter, notably in watercolour, and printmaker, gallery owner and teacher, born in Darvel, Ayrshire. Graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1959, some years later taking a higher diploma in art. Taylor made a big impact on the Scottish gallery scene when in 1963 he opened the New Charing Cross Gallery in Glasgow, giving young artists a chance to exhibit more adventurous work. Taylor had a long association with the Glasgow Print Studio as senior technician. In 1977, with Ainslie Yule, he was recommended by Scottish Arts Council for a residency at Editions Alecto to work on a screenprint. Taylor’s own work could sometimes have a strong polemical element, notably regarding war and the nuclear threat. As well as taking part in many group shows across Europe he was a regular solo exhibitor. DETAIL: Artist in oil, watercolour and stained glass and teacher, born Manchester, full name George Osmund Caine. Studied at Birmingham College of Art, 1930–7, and in Italy, 1938. Served in the Military Police during World War II. Gained an honours degree in medieval and modern history and studied singing at Guildhall School once he had begun teaching, singing lieder and choral works on the radio and in concerts. He taught, 1945-76, including principal lectureship in graphic design at Twickenham College of Technology. Caine was a forceful, unconventional teacher who developed a successful, broad-based vocational course embracing illustration, exhibition and graphic design, typography and photography. In 1966 he made two films: The Ruskin Country, and, with his wife Mary, The Glastonbury Giants.
Her associated book, The Glastonbury Zodiac: key to the mysteries of Britain, appeared in 1978. Took part in numerous mixed exhibitions, including NEAC, RBSA and RA, and had many solo shows in Britain and France, later ones including Duncan Campbell Fine Art, 1986, Galerie Salammbo, Paris, 1987, and retrospective at Orleans House Gallery, Twickenham, 1998. English hill figures, British castles, monumental effigies, Kew Gardens and France were notable themes in his work.
