Códice Side Table by Agnes Studio
By Agnes Studio
Located in Guatemala, GT
Codex or Códice means in latin a chunk of wood, it’s also used to refer to hand written manuscripts. Mayan and Mexica Codices were written in wood bark, mostly in pictorial Glyphs, but also using a numerical system that consists of dots and dashes and a special symbol for zero. In this series we wanted to translate and abstract this idea of the knowledge and essence of a Códice; the importance of communication and its evolution through time, through the wood carvings both in its geometrical and systematic patterned repetition of its drawer in contrast with the organic and random carvings made by the artisanal technique of “conchitas, hand chiseled by master artisans in Antigua guatemala.
