England, ca. late 17th century. A fabulous antique Jacobean or Charles II style chest on stand. Features solid oak construction with a planked top with moulded edge above two small and two large geometrically paneled drawers. Cast brass drop handles and escutcheons are most likely replacements but are period and stylistically correct. (This is not uncommon as brasses were often sold or melted down in times of conflict.) Supported by an unusual separate arched base that includes two narrow drawers and turned bun feet. An attractive survivor perfectly suited to a variety of interiors, we were drawn to the piece’s dark finish and dramatic - yet lovely - presence.
