In 1984, Hermès CEO Juan-Louis Dumas boarded a flight and sat beside Jane Birkin. As she stowed away her straw handbag, the contents fell to the floor. As Birkin gathered her belongings she explained to Dumas that she had not been able to find a leather weekend bag that she liked.
