Part of artist Janet Hamilton's signature series exploring geometric lines and color grids. "The paint was applied using knives and carefully placed to create this bold and textured abstract," says Janet. The modernist design explores a rich range of blues interspersed with white on a black background, with mosaic-like accents at irregular intervals.
About the Artist
Janet Hamilton is an abstract expressionist who creates heavily-textured and multi-layered paintings. She is an Illinois-based artist whose studio space is a converted library complete with stained glass windows, a balcony and fireplace. Throughout her portfolio, she demonstrates a mastery over color choice; each palette creates a specific emotion and mood. She builds the texture of her painting with many layers to reflect the emotional depth of her passion-filled process.

An intricate assemblage of reclaimed wood, carefully cut and placed together to form a balanced composition that also highlights the character of the individual pieces. "No matter the side, there is a natural middle - a common ground - to meet upon," says artist Heather Patterson. Liquid silver metal painted in directional palette knife strokes over a white ground. "Each stroke is purposeful in drawing the eye through the piece," explains M. Clark. Thick, painterly texture provides pleasing angles to reflect light. The edges of the piece are finished in silver. Created by carefully manipulating metallic foil with heat and varying pressure over the course of many weeks. This is a highly specialized and unique technique developed by M. to achieve her goals of bending light and drawing out distinctive elements in the foil. The work is very luminous and will display individual characteristics in different lighting situations.

Maya Malioutina's ongoing series "Lighter" is inspired by Rumi's quote: "The wound is where the light enters you." Maya explains, "Not just our wounds, all our cracks and scratches - the sum of our life experiences, are what makes each one of us unique, whole and beautiful and serve, simultaneously, as an entrance through which the light enters us and exits - through which we are able to shine the light that we carry inside us outward."
About the Artist
Maya’s abstract mixed-media artworks are inspired by urban imperfections–cracks in sidewalks, peeling paint, rusted metal. Influenced by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, Maya embraces the aesthetic flaws of city life, translating daily discoveries into heavily layered and textured paintings. “Some works have close to fifty layers,” she mentions. “I like to layer paint and media slowly, a little at a time.” Maya employs a neutral palette and generous applications of metallic leaf to create meditative yet sumptuous artworks, quietly enticing the viewer.

Part of Ryan's long-running series of portraits done in charcoal and oil paint on gold washed paper. Ryan enjoys pairing the fluidity and transparency of oil paint with the substance of charcoal. "Much like the ballet of the same name, "Giselle" combines dramatic patterns with stoic expression," says Ryan. The figure wears an abstract dress of dripping circles, her hair in modernist angles. She looks intensely at the viewer, her slender frame elongated by her strong pose.

This is a highly specialized and unique technique developed by M. to achieve her goals of bending light and drawing out distinctive elements in the foil. About the Artist
M. Clark sculpts metallic foil with heat and pressure to create rich surfaces that are highly reactive to shifts in light. She strives to continually push the bounds of her gold foil medium, including working directly with a manufacturer to develop foil in specific sizes and colors that were not previously available. As a person with dyslexia, her artwork has roots in the way she processes symbols. "The multidimensional shape and arc of letters are more powerful than stringed characters forming words," she explains. M. lives in New York and works in a studio on the 35th floor with big windows overlooking the East River. She describes it as an inspiring and calming space, and is fastidious about keeping the place organized. Her work has been exhibited nationally, including a large scale installation in the Smithsonian, and is collected internationally.

About the Artist
When asked how she became an artist, sculptor Heather Patterson replied, “I just seem to be built that way.” Heather is passionate about creating, and is constantly inspired by her daily surroundings and experiences. The artist’s body of work is governed by her mission to reassign meaning to materials that have outlived their perceived purpose. She works with reclaimed wood and window panes to produce geometric wall sculptures that may remind the viewer of abstract modernist paintings. Modernism conjures an underlying tension in Heather-–a “vibration,” she calls it. Each sculpture is created without a premeditated plan or sketch, but is instead governed by feeling and intuition.
