c. 1850 Watercolour - The Victorian Bride

About the Item

A delicate Victorian miniature portrait, exquisite in both its execution and presentation. The portrait shows a beautiful young bride, with rosy cheeks, in a wedding dress of a style fashionable in the 1850s. She wears a delicate veil, hanging from the back of a flower garland in her hair. She holds herself with elegance and looks deumerly off into the distance. A strip of red curtain can be seen to her left which adds a wonderful splash of colour and grounds the, otherwise, ethereal portrait. The portrait is unsigned. The painting is presented in an utterly charming original, embossed leather box from. The frame boasts a velvet lined interior (this would likely once have been red but has now discoloured to an attractive brown), and a gilt oval inner window. The frame is finished with the original glazing and a deep purple velvet back. There is a strip of the original red silk taffeta at the reverse that would have been used to pull open the back of the frame. There is a brass hanger at the reverse. This is a truly charming object of tactile size and proportions. On vellum.
