About the Item

The pink and blue speckled and sparkling vase makes it an excellent addition to any home, capable of transporting anyone back to a time in France that was brimming with artistic creativity and wonder. The signature by the artist is etched into the base of the vase. Charles Schneider was born in Chateau-Thierry in 1881, though his family would soon move to Nancy which had become by the late 19th century had become center of Art Nouveau. In 1898 he began working at Daum, one of France's most prominent glassworks establishments. While getting practical training in engraving and decorating at the Daum workshop, he took drawing and modeling less from the Art Nouveau decorator and illustrator Henri Berge. He studied at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1904 and began exhibiting engravings at the Salon de la Societe des Artistes Francais where he won the prize twice. With his brother Ernest Schneider, who also worked at Daum, they started their own business with a glass factory called Schneider Freres & Wolf in 1913 (the Wolf being their friend Henri Wolf). Their factory work would come to an end for three years due to the outbreak of the First World War, re-opening in 1917 as Societe Anonyme des Verreries Schneider. After a 1918 fire destroyed the studios at Galle, many artists from Galle went to Schneider's bringing the "marqueterie de verre" technique with them to Charles Schneider. The company continued to innovate glasswork for the next ten years until the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the global depression affected the production for the company, places severe limitations on their production. Charles Schneider lost his factory after the fall of France in the Second World War, being converted to a restaurant by the Germans. After the war he opened his final factory, Cristalleries Schneider, which he operated until his death in 1952 and remained open until 1981.
