Martin Canin
"Untitled" - Historic Yellow and Orange Geometric Abstract Oil Painting

1960s

About the Item

Untitled geometric abstract oil painting by Martin Canin, measuring 60x50-inch. Martin Canin’s work can be linked to two 1960s movements: Color field and Op Art. Like many artists of the period, Canin focuses on the effect of large fields of color interacting on the canvas and the effect of the color combinations on the viewer. In this piece Canin combines a minimalistic geometrical composition with the optical effects of color juxtaposition. Vivid yellow, orange and purple stripes are carefully alternated to create the optical illusion of a vibrating and moving surface. The triangular shape enhances the dynamism of the composition, also increased by the powerful contrast with the large white background of the canvas. Canin states, "My work has gone through many changes in the more than forty years that I have been painting. Manet’s statement still resonates for me: To be concise in art is both necessary and elegant. Luminosity is still the goal, oil paint on canvas still the preferred medium, shape and color still the plastic means to speak my particular expression." Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1927, Martin Canin is firmly rooted in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. He received his major art training at Syracuse University, where he was awarded the B.F.A. in 1951. In 1959 he went to Tokyo, Japan, where he had his first one-man show in 1960. At the end of the 60s he started teaching at the Parsons School of Design. His work is part of the Tate Gallery and the Yale University Art Gallery's permanent collection, and it has been exhibited in Europe, Japan and the United States, including several one-man shows at the historic Graham Gallery at 1014 Madison Avenue, NY. • Gimme Shelter
    By Andrei Petrov
    Located in New York, NY
Andrei Petrov is an American artist of Russian origins. He is best known for his abstract oil paintings where calibrated stratifications of intense shades of colors are scraped to expose prior layers. This creative process is the expression of his lifelong struggle to retain memories of his childhood and life. “ As a child I was involved in an accident that affected my memory and compelled me to paint. Ever since, I have been trying to reclaim what I lost through my work”. His abstractions at times reference natural landscapes and atmospheric transparencies, like the beautiful blue, green and earth colors of this work seem to suggest. The title of this painting "Gimme Shelter...

  • 1972 Abstract Oil Painting Homage to Ilya Bolotowskiy Hard Edged Abstraction
    By Johnathan Singer
    Located in Surfside, FL
This work takes its cues from Ilya Bolotowsky and Piet Mondrian. A fine example of 1970's hard edged geometric abstraction. Artist, painter & master photographer Jonathan Singer was born in 1948. As a young man, Singer, a native New Yorker took art classes at the Museum of Modern Ar. As the protégé of Ilya Bolotowski, the painter (a member of "The Ten," a group that included Louis Schanker, Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko, and Joseph Solman), Singer dreamed of becoming an artist, but his Jewish mother got her wish and Singer became a doctor instead but always kept a hand in the realm of art and photography. His two favorite subjects were flowers and graffiti. He’d spent many hours with graffiti writers (some of them famous, such as Lady Pink). In Fort Apache...
