  • Guna II (Abstract Painting)
    By Tracey Adams
    Located in London, GB
Guna II (Abstract Painting) Encaustic on Okawara paper - Unframed The title, Guna (2016), is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘string, thread or strand’ and was inspired by Adams yoga practice. “It’s a key concept in various schools of Hindu philosophy which states there are 3 gunas: goodness, passion and darkness, all present in everyone and everything, but in different proportions. The interplay of the 3 gunas define the character of someone or something, of nature and determines the progress of life”. (Wikipedia) The pieces in this series are printed with pigmented encaustic on Japanese paper; they are mounted on panel and coated with medium or stand alone like this work on Okawara paper. These artworks were a reaction to the more serialized and geometric work Adams was doing, a need to break from that and work in a freeing and more physical way. Tracey Adams is an American abstract painter and printmaker. Her artworks reflect a strong interest in musical patterns, rhythms, lyrical compositional elements and what she calls a sense of performance. She lives and works in Carmel, California. Work by Adams is part of the permanent collections of several museums, including the Bakersfield Art Museum, the Monterey Museum of Art, the Fresno Art Museum, the Tucson Art...

  • With Many a Sunlit Arrow
    Located in Clayton, MO
In "With Many a Sunlit Arrow," color, line, shape, and texture collide on Kozuke ivory paper crafted from the fibers of the kozo plant. This one-of-a-kind, encaustic monotype illuminates a poetic interior landscape. The softness of the washi paper juxtaposed with the lush, textured encaustic/mixed media bring a sense of fragility and lightness to the artwork. Process: Alena's artistic approach is intuitive and gestural. She often works with a limited color palette of encaustic pigment and uses an iterative and spontaneous approach to apply the media. The final phases of creation sometimes include additional intuitive mark-making, subtle line work and sentimental hand-written text from historical, contemporary, or autobiographical sources. Washi Paper: The texture and slight distress in select areas near certain media application is intentional and intended to be part of the overall aesthetic. Shipping: The artwork will be rolled, shipped in a tube, and take approximately 5 business days. For shorter delivery timelines please message Alena directly to make arrangements. Matte and Frame Ideas: Float frames (glass/no glass over the monotype; glass will "flatten" the monotype) Traditional frames with or without a matte When framing the monotype a light ivory or white matte board illuminates the colors. For assistance and/or advice with framing and mounting the monotypes, please contact me directly. Signature and Certificate All artworks are signed on the back in pencil and include the title, creation year, and my signature. A certificate of authenticity is also included with the artwork. ++++ Alena Ahrens is a contemporary American-Asian artist. She studied performance art at MoMA...
