Exile by Ernesto Vila

Late 1970s

About the Item

Large 1970s acrylic on paper by Uruguayan artist Ernesto Vila ( born June 28th 1936 ) painted while in exile in Paris after his 6 year imprisonment in Uruguay by the military regime. Presented in contemporary frame under glass which will be removed for shipping. He was a student of José Gurvich and Guillermo Fernández at the Torres García Workshop . Together with Clara Scremini and Héctor Vilche, also Gurvich's students, he formed the group Taller Montevideo, with whom he traveled to Europe in 1966 and made large installations and kinetic murals in Spain, France, Italy and England, and participated in the Paris Biennial in 1969. He returned to Uruguay in 1970. Between 1972 and 1978, the regime of the civic-military dictatorship of his country kept him in prison for political reasons. Upon regaining his freedom, he settled in Paris and in 1986 he returned to Uruguay again. Since 1991 he has served as curator of the Torres García Museum , the Maldonado Cultural Center and the Sívori Museum . In 2003 he received the Figari Award from the Central Bank of Uruguay in recognition of his artistic career. In 2007 he represented his country at the Venice Biennale . Work In Vila's work the experience of imprisonment during the dictatorship and his Parisian exile is made visible in series with veiled and ungraspable faces, which evaporate and at the same time materialize in front of the viewer's eyes, transmitting the painful experiences lived by the artist in own flesh. This particular work shows a head silenced and smothered by bandages and ties. The weight of the upper part of the picture which seems out of proportion is intentional in order to evoke the sense of intense pressure which artists and other political voices were put under to keep their political views censored. In his later series, the way of approaching the subject changes, incorporating papers with cuts, tears and folds, releasing forms and advancing in spatiality, towards freedom. Although this piece isn't signed and is marked as "attributed to" it was acquired from friends of the artist along with other signed works.
