About the Item

Peasant boy riding a donkey in the manner of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Oil on canvas, 16th Century. The painting portrays a mother looking on as a young peasant boy holding a basket, poses sitting on a donkey. The work shares a period genre of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, being the flemish masters focus on the poor and their daily existence. Fascinated by the lives of Flemish commoners, Bruegel earned the nickname “Peasant Bruegel,” as well as the misguided reputation for being of peasant origins, when in-fact he was somewhat affluent. Bruegel, was actually revered by scholars, and frequently pursued by wealthy businessmen and connoisseurs for commissions. He often shared common elements of focus between his works, being either subject, pallet or compositional techniques. The Donkey is often used with in his commoner paintings and drawings, as it is a working animal and symbol of the working class. Similarly, the way in which the boys clothing is a deep hue of red, is conducive with Bruegel's understanding of how colour is used to pull the eye within the composition (specifically red). See reference to "Netherlandish Proverbs", 1559. From a painterly perspective, the treatment of the faces and the overall anatomy of the subjects, share a visual parallel with many of the works of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Indeed, the age of the work would indicate a contemporary understanding of Bruegel's techniques and methodology. The painting has labels verso on the stretcher bar in reference to an auction at the Ernst Museum in Budapest. The Museums Collection housed mainly Contemporary Art from the turn of the century and the Early 20th Century. In 1917 Ernst began to organise auctions that ran for several years until his untimely death in 1937. However, in 1939 the personal collection of Lajos Ernst was auctioned and the majority was purchased by Hungarian Museums, the rest being attained by private buyers. From the research we have conducted to date, we feel that the labels are most probably in reference to the 1939 sale. The painting was relined a significant time ago, although a recent consevation inspection, clean and repair has revealed the relining is in good condition and perfectly stable. The painting is in good condition for its age. It was recently cleaned, revarnished and had a small tear repaired. Previous to this the painting was relined some time ago. Stamp to the original relining may be an indication of the restorer.
