About the Item

Artist: Daniel Brennan Title: Girl in White Materials : Oil on Canvas Date : 1960's Dimensions : 46 1/2 x 32 in. COA provided In the late 1960's, Daniel Brennan had a day job loading boxcars for Railway Express. During nights, he would go to a coffee house (Lawrence Gallery and Coffee House, at 43rd and Main St., KCMO), to sit and draw before heading home to paint. The gallery owners, Anne and Sidney Lawrence, took an interest in Brennan's work - especially Sidney, an art historian. Sidney is quoted describing the vision of Brennan's work as being " rooted in a sense of organic line and the flower shapes of Art Nouveau," and "his portraits achieve dignity through a decision of line and purity of composition." The Lawrence's made an offer to buy 15 of Brennan's paintings if he painted in Mexico for a year. When Brennan arrived in Mexico, he discovered the colors and native life resonated with his artistic sensibilities. He eventually moved to San Miguel de Allende and stayed there for the rest of his life. His work was featured in many solo and group exhibitions in Kansas City, Texas, California, New York and Mexico. Brennan's work has also been placed in private collections in Missouri, California, Hawaii and elsewhere.
