Doug Smith
Never a Dull Moment

About the Item

Encouraged by his parents at a young age to pursue his love of art, Doug Smith brings to life vast planes of melting colors and geometric lines, with the inclusion of meticulously painted farmsteads paying homage to the idyllic farmhouses of times past. The tiny scenes, brimming with familiarity and warmth, anchor the endlessly abstract landscape in a believable reality. The inspired paintings blend aerial landscapes, Smith’s experience in graphic design, and a traditional detailed vignette showing a peek into pastoral American life. Smith received his first formal artistic instruction at San Francisco City College, and after working as a graphic designer in San Francisco, continued his education at the Art Center College of Design and the California Art Institute. Drawing from his Californian roots, Smith evokes the aesthetics of the abstract aerial landscapes of Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud. Smith has long been fascinated by the vast mosaics of the archetypal American West. With vivid planes of color and an attention to refined geometric composition, Smith’s paintings are an intimate mix between abstract expressionism and a small dash of realistic landscape painting, inspired by long flights over the country and even longer drives across it. The inclusion of weathered barns and silos, wraparound porches, and rustic windmills transport the viewer to idyllic and familiar scenes reminiscent of travels through the Western and Midwestern United States. Smith has exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the United States. His art, along with eleven other American artists, was featured at an exhibition at the U. S. Embassy in Moscow in 2012-2013. The Rockwell Museum in New York and the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia have both acquired one of his paintings for their permanent collections.

THE OCCUPANT 2020 Paris, France A smaller work done in parallel to a complimentary piece ‘WOMBS, TOMBS, TOOLS,’ which portrays hand-painted serif typeset words ‘THE OCCUPANT.’ A ribbon of black along the base of the work hosts a line which reads: “The offices in the desert vending out futures -- if you had gotten a good one you too would want them all to know -- where our bodies have been.” The work is a commentary on the spaces we inhabit, and how they are all temporary. Paint is acrylic with the exception of the red elements, which are formed with oil paint. The painting is executed on two connected, reclaimed wood panels...
