About the Item
This piece by Heather Hartman, made for her show "Kudzu Season," is one of a series of four paintings representing the four seasons relative to the Kudzu growth cycle. "Waning," is the autumnal piece of the series. Peach and magenta undertones outline a hazy vision of leaves bustling in the sunshine. The dark silhouette of a kudzu vine curves in from the upper right-hand side of the painting and angles down to the lower center. Because Autumn is the season of growth for Kudzu, the vine is shown mostly bare, with several leaves sprouting in the lower half of the painting. White "sun spots" scattered across the deep shadows of the vine not only create visually appealing contrast, but give the painting the dreamlike qualities of an old photograph. A memory of a sunny day peppered with fall colors is encapsulated in this piece.
The kudzu plant is both a visual and conceptual touchpoint, signifying the historical complexity and seasonal cycles of the American South. Originally introduced to provide shade in the home garden, Kudzu was later promoted as a cure for farmland ravaged by tobacco and cotton monoculture. Its invasive nature was not truly understood until it was too late. The roots grew deeper. The wounded land, bandaged in a green blanket, did not heal.
Yet kudzu persists. An undeniable part of the Southern landscape, it has been used as food, as medicine, a way to build homes, and a means of creating sustainable fuel. The question of Kudzu is still incomplete. Understanding its visual presence in Hartman’s surroundings offered a new way to grapple with other incomplete questions of ecology and mutability.

WATER AND LIGHT (THE THIEF) - Rainbow, Spring Nature Painting of Kudzu Vine
By Heather Hartman
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
WATER AND LIGHT (THE THIEF) by Heather Hartman, made for her show "Kudzu Season," is one of a series of four paintings representing the four seasons relative to the Kudzu growth cycle. "Water and Light" is the spring-inspired painting of this seasonal series. During the spring, the kudzu plant begins to awaken from its winter dormancy. The predominantly light blue/sage green atmosphere of this painting gives way to the vibrant curve of a rainbow on the right-hand side of the painting. The leaves of a tree in the background give us the sense that plant life is beginning to flourish. The silhouette of a bare kudzu vine...

CHROMASEEDS - Framed Mixed Media Painting of 3 Gaillardia w/ Blooms Falling
By Heather Hartman
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
CHROMASEEDS is a multilayered composition created with paper and tyvek cut-outs painted with oil, acrylic, and gouache, sealed with polyester mesh layers. The plants represented in the piece are Gaillardia flowers, commonly known as blanket flowers, native to North America and often bred for their decorative, ornamental shape. In her creative process, Hartman anthropomorphizes the flowers, paying attention to their dance-like growth movement. Here, their shadows dance in the prismatic light of the rainbow, while the wind catches their seeds, cultivating the garden. The vibrant, rainbow light was achieved by painting a prismatic shape on tyvec and black paper, creating a reverse silhouette...
