Minjoo Kim
Scenery of Mind

2018

About the Item

The Ideascape of Minjoo Kim The artist explains that she painted “not the realistic depiction, but the inner tree, the objects, the shapes, and a psychological space of [her] own.” In her work, concrete things are not expressed in their usual forms, but within a space of contemplation that represents the thoughts and mind of the artist. An “ideascape” is a landscape painting that depicts the trajectory of thoughts. Thoughts about the shapes of things become the forest, the body, the chair, and the ladder. Excerpt from ‘Idly Strolling in the Space of Thought: Min Joo Kim’s Reason to Paint a Forest in 2014’ by Yeon Shim Chung (Professor at Hongik University) ARTIST STATEMENT Painting to me is a place where I can ask, answer myself and wander about within it. I don`t know what is it that I want to ask or what answer I have to give to my question, but I enjoy and imagine the efforts and thoughts in the process. I don`t have to come up with a great question nor seek an answer to that question. I simply repeat questioning and answering; if there is something that emerges, I imagine around it and make some scribbles. In some days it is satisfactory since the images resemble my thoughts, in some other days it is not so good. My paintings are also the things that remain after this process. Sometimes I mix my everyday world and an imaginary world together and bring the ideal nature into the real space, other times I put a fishing net or a dipper into a pond that is deeper than abyss and wave them, or become a fisher who dose not catch fishes but merge with the fishes or a woodcutter who does not cut trees but merge with the trees. I attempt to find the amusement of deviation and imagination through points where different time, space and roles are mixed with their boundaries blurred and their distinctions obscure.

  • Nocturne
    By Paul Jacobsen
    Located in Denver, CO
Inspired by scenes from iconic American landscapes, ranging from arid deserts to lush forests, Jacobsen delves into humanity’s connection to nature and the technology that often mediates that experience. Embedded in the works is the recognition of nature’s immense power in contrast to its quickening fragility. Increasingly, under threat from the continuing rollback of regulations and protections in favor of exploitation for commercial gain, the double-edged sword of technology and the legacy of Westward expansion continue into the present day. For Jacobsen, American parks act as a foil to European colonization and resource extraction. While the creation of National Parks may be one of America’s greatest innovations, in preserving these beautiful and once wild places, they are in practice reduced to roadside attractions. Jacobsen states, “By elevating these picturesque landscapes we also diminish our own place in them. No longer are we participants in the divine dance but instead menacing spectators observing from stadium...
