Shoko Okumura
Empathy Towards Things No 6 landscape gold leaf pigment on paper clouds nature

2023

About the Item

Shoko paints with the classic Japanese technique - she prepares the paper with gold leaf, then paints on top with mineral pigments. For this gold leaf application, the gold leaf overlaps and creates the tile pattern on the painting. This kind of antique screen texture is admired a lot in Japan because people understand it is delicate gold leaf lamination (requires lots of skill and patience) instead of just gold color painting. "Empathy towards Things" is a Japanese term for the awareness of impermanence (mujō), or transience of things. "Mono-no aware: the ephemeral nature of beauty – the quietly elated, bittersweet feeling of having been witness to the dazzling circus of life – knowing that none of it can last, thus the importance of living at the moment, treasuring what we have now, feel grateful and be happy. In Japan, there are four very distinct seasons, and you really become aware of life and changes, like the clouds, and the transience. You become aware of how significant those moments are. This work is framed in Italy, artwork size is 41 x 32cm, framed size is approx. 56 x 45cm. BIOGRAPHY - SHOKO OKUMURA Born in Japan in 1983, currently Shoko Okumura lives and works in Milan Italy. Recipient of a distinguished government scholarship, in 2008 Shoko graduated with a BFA in Traditional Japanese Painting at Tokyo University of Arts. She then moved to Florence Italy to study the art of fresco restorations. This newfound understanding of fresco techniques and colors led to experimenting and applying Italian pigments to Japanese painting techniques, which often utilize metal supports such as gold or silver leaf. This style of painting is more demanding than what appears at first glance. An intent gazer must mesh palpable first impressions with subtle hints and allusions, thereby expanding one’s extrinsic perceptive vision, the image within the frame, to the inner self – of both artist and observer – to which the image truly appeals. Shoko is inspirited to paint works that represent the relationship between human beings and nature. She is deeply intrigued by seasons passing, colors waning and sounds of nature merging towards a renewed harmony, all these have always, across all cultures, been a source both of art inspiration through its myriad of expressions and of deep emotions for souls open to the world’s wonders.
