He began his artistic career by working for three years in a glassworks. King went on to study painting under William Bromley in London, and also with Bonnat and Cormon in Paris. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1879, the Royal Institute in 1886, later becoming Vice President. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
