Attributed to Nathaniel Hone
!8th century Irish or English portrait of a woman with Ermin, blue dressing lace

1780

About the Item

Wonderful 18th century Irish or English portrait, attributed to the Irish painter Nathaniel Hone. Nathaniel Hone was born in Dublin but by 1748 had settled in London. Originally a member of the Society of Artists he seceded to became one of the thirty-four original Foundation Members of the Royal Academy in 1768. A painter and miniaturist, he was a frequent exhibitor at the Academy, but his somewhat quarrelsome character led him into conflict with Reynolds, whose reliance on Old Master motifs he famously lampooned in his painting The Conjuror, 1775, National Gallery of Ireland. This example came from a private collection in Baltimore MD. After we bought it the painting was returned to the Uk to be cleaned and restored. After this was completed I found an amazing black and gold frame that dates from the early 19th century and this was fitted onto the portrait. The obvious quality of the painting is evident in the skill in which the artist has captured the beauty of the young lady, the handling of the Ermine and silk dress, all top quality. Provenance, Cider House Galleries, UK.

The painting is signed and dated lower left and is an oil on canvas, but alas the signature is not obvious enough to know the painter.
