David Simonson
19th century Austrian Portrait of a young girl in white dress with Red bows

1862

About the Item

Wonderful 19th-century Austrian portrait of a young girl in a pretty white and red dress. Simonson was an Austrian painter of portraits and historical subjects. He trained and painted in Germany and Austria and this example is typical of the high-quality paintings he was able to produce. This piece came from a collection of portraits which included another example of the artist's work. The piece is also inscribed 'Vien', so either the artist lived and painted this piece in Vienna or the sitter lived in Vienna. The painting has been cleaned and re-varnished and the frame has also been restored in the UK. The style is typical of the high Victorian style that was so popular during the 1860s-1870s and I'm sure would have been painted for a wealthy Austrian family. This example by Simonson is signed and dated 1862. Both paintings were obviously painted together and I'm sure the sitters are sisters.

  • 19th century British portrait of Sir Charles Dickens seated in an interior
    By Daniel Maclise
    Located in Woodbury, CT
Well painted 19th-century portrait of Sir Charles Dickens. The original painting is in the National Gallery in London and I'm sure this piece would have been painted by a fan of the author who was also a very good artist as this piece is a very good copy of the original painting. There was a great fashion to paint copies of famous paintings during the 19th century and most of the world's most famous paintings have been copied many times. Often the artist who does the copy is very talented but usually anonymous With this piece, it's the only way to own an antique copy...

  • 19th century French, Surrender of the French at Huningen Fort to the Austrians
    Located in Woodbury, CT
Wonderful French period copy of the famous painting by Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille, which the original is now in a museum in Paris. This piece came from a private collection in New Jersey where it had been since it was purchased in France back in the 1950s. The previous owner was an Art dealer in NYC during the 1950s-70s and she kept some of her favorite paintings, this being one of them. The piece was re-framed in the 1990s In 35 years of dealing in paintings, I have never seen another example of this scene, it is very rare.! History of the scene: In the Siege of Hüningen (27 November 1796 – 1 February 1797), the Austrians captured the city from the French. Hüningen is in the present-day Department of Haut-Rhin, France. Its fortress lay approximately 2.5 miles (4.0 km) north of the Swiss city of Basel and .5 miles (0.80 km) north of the spot where the present-day borders of Germany, France, and Switzerland meet. During the time of this siege, the village was part of the Canton of Basel City and the fortress lay in an area contested between the German states and the First French Republic. The siege occurred within the French Revolutionary Wars during which Revolutionary France ranged...
