An original offset-lithograph, exhibition poster on wove paper after American artist Lee Krasner (1908-1984) titled "Whitney Museum of American Art (Lee Krasner: Large Paintings)", 1973. Edition size unknown. Printer unknown and published by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY. Poster produced for a special exhibition of Krasner's work "Large Paintings" at the Whitney Museum of American Art from November, 1973 - January, 1974. The image featured on this poster is Krasner's 1951-1953, 58" x 82.5", oil on canvas painting "Blue and Black", ("Lee Krasner: Large Paintings" - Tucker No. 1, page 18). Reference: "Lee Krasner: A Catalogue Raisonné" - Landau Fig. 32, page 317. Provenance: private collection - New Haven, CT. Sheet size: 25.13" x 30.88". Image size: 20.75" x 29.63". Some minor toning at edges. In otherwise excellent condition. Extremely rare. "The exhibition of “Large Paintings” by Lee Krasner, currently installed in the spacious fourth‐floor galleries of the Whitney Museum of American Art, is the first major museum survey of the artist's work to come to New York. (A retrospective was mounted in London as long ago as 1965.) The Whitney show is not, however, a true retrospective. It consists of 18 works from the period 1953 to 1973, and as the title indicates, both small paintings and drawings have been excluded. It thus brings us some of Miss Krasner's most ambitious pictures, but denies us a glimpse of the younger painter who first exhibited her work with the American Abstract Artists group in 1940 and then became an active participant in the formation of the New York School in the years immediately following. The artist we see at the Whitney is, for the most part, an artist fully in command of an established pictorial idiom — the abstract expressionist style pioneered by Miss Krasner's late husband, Jackson Pollock. Miss Krasner brings a power of her own to this idiom, a less desperate and more lyrical affirmation, and there is no suggestion of anything secondhand or merely appropriated in these pictures. And as we know from paintings omitted from the Whitney show— especially the untitled 1949 abstraction that hangs in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art —her involvement in this effort has a longer history than is indicated in this survey. Still, the present selection of pictures suggests to this observer that expressionism has never been Miss Krasner's forte. The earliest picture at the Whitney—“Blue and Black” (1951 to 1953) is closer to Matisse than it is to Pollock, and the latest pictures mark a return to this Matissean allegiance. It is in this realm, where the agitated surfaces and ululating rhythms of expressionism give way to a darner, cleaner, more contemplative imagery that she has, I believe, painted her strongest pictures." - New York Times, Nov. 22, 1973 by Hilton Kramer. Lenore "Lee" Krasner (born Lena Krassner on October 27, 1908 - June 19, 1984) was an American abstract expressionist painter, with a strong specialty in collage, who was married to Jackson Pollock. Although there was much cross-pollination between their two styles, the relationship somewhat overshadowed her contribution for some time. Krasner’s training, influenced by George Bridgman and Hans Hofmann, was the more formalized, especially in the depiction of human anatomy, and this enriched Pollock’s more intuitive and unstructured output. Krasner is now seen as a key transitional figure within abstraction, who connected early-20th-century art with the new ideas of postwar America, and her work fetches high prices at auction. She is also one of the few female artists to have had a retrospective show at the Museum of Modern Art.
