About the Item

Jennifer Jokhoo Shard London Bridge Limited Edition Linocut Edition of 25 Image Size: H 55.5m x W 38cm Sheet Size: H 59.3cm x W 42cm Sold Unframed (Please note that in situ images are purely an indication of how a piece may look). Shard London Bridge is a limited edition 2 layer linocut print. The bold purple and yellow colours add an extra interest and unusual element to a familiar city skyline scene. Originally from New Zealand, Printmaker, Painter Jennifer Jokhoo works from her home studio in the Surrey Hills. She studied Fine Art and majored in Painting/Printmaking at Canterbury University School of Fine Arts in Christchurch, New Zealand. In 1998 she went on to complete a Diploma in Secondary Teaching. Since qualifying she has followed a career in Art education and has taught in New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom. In 2012 she was elected a member of Greenwich printmakers association. Then in May 2016, she was elected an associate member of the Society of Graphic and Fine Arts and received the ‘Associate’s award’ for her print ‘Summer Harvest’ at the Draw 2017 exhibition. Her work is exhibited widely across the South East in many galleries and is held in private collections in the UK, New Zealand, Mauritius, Australia, USA and Canada. Upon moving to the Surrey hills in 2014, Jennifer’s interest shifted from architectural landscapes, to areas that are closer to home. Hillside views, fields, wide skies and horizontal bands are elements that are visited and revisited in her Reduction linocut prints. The creative process requires intricate cutting and layering of colour which takes place over many weeks. Each reduction linocut is produced by hand; from the initial drawings, to the intricate cutting, inking and printing of editions. As a result Jennifer’s editions are kept very small. Jennifer works in relief and intaglio methods, however her preferred printmaking technique is ‘Reduction linoprinting’ otherwise known as the suicide method! In this method, a multi coloured print is pulled from a single block. The lino is inked with the lightest colour and the first printing is made. The areas to remain that colour are then cut away. This is the process for each layer, therefore it cannot be rewound or repeated. As a result Jennifer’s editions are kept very small. Her linocuts are drawn and cut by hand and her preferred inks are oil-based due to the vivid colours that can be achieved. They are also more agreeable with colour mixing. Jennifer enjoys the challenges of this method which requires thoughtful planning and execution. At the same time, it enables a certain degree of flexibility as the concept she begins with is never set in stone. The print evolves and changes shape during the process. She constantly responds to what the work needs rather than being restricted by preconceived ideas.

DAVIES, Peter (b.1953) ‘Solstice Sun’ 2019 Linocut on paper 15.0 x 10.0 cm (6 x 4 in.) Artists Statement Since starting to paint in 1981 my mainly plein aire landscapes have used a mechanical, rather than lyrical or painterly, approach. This probably puts my observational paint – by – numbers pictures at a creative and expressive disadvantage. But it doers prove conducive to a structural or compositional kind of drawing over which are applied layers of oil paint to deliver idiosyncratic textural and atmospheric effects. Furthermore, a Ben Nicholson – inspired dichotomy between foreground rooftops or architecture and a naturalistic marine or landscape background makes a chosen plastic and temperamental approach apt. So when in 2004 I was inspired by the much loved master relief printmaker John Liddell 1925-2005) to try my hand at linocut I found a process ideally suited to my mechanical bent it has been a love affair ever since. The workshop he founded in 1991 Poole Printmakers is a safe haven, an intimate co-operative near Poole Quay, and some of the most scenic terrain in Britain. It is also an area where my art career started in 1978 and inspired my early book Art in Poole and Dorset, published by Poole Historical Trust, 1987. Many blissful and absorbing hours over the last 13 years have yielded a large body of linocut prints in which I exercise those mechanical and reproductive qualities proper to the medium.
