Paul Kiss Lighting

Hungarian, 1885-1962

Paul Kiss helped elevate metalwork to an art form in the 1920s and 1930s, creating beautiful Art Deco-inspired furniture like table lamps and wall mirrors with exquisite ornate details. The pieces often featured geometric designs, plant motifs and human and animal figures.

Kiss was born in Hungary in 1885, but he settled in Paris in 1907. There, he worked under Raymond Subes and Edgar Brandt, two of the most celebrated metalworkers of the day. After World War I, Kiss opened his own studio and showroom on the city’s rue Léon-Delhomme. Kiss designed and produced numerous pieces of iron furniture throughout the 1920s and 1930s. He was commissioned to restore historic monuments and make new public monuments as well. Among his clients were the kings of Siam and Egypt.

Kiss produced the metalwork for the Monuments aux Morts war memorial in Levallois-Perret, France, for which he received the silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1924. In 1925, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes.

In the 1920s, Kiss was a mentor to the skilled young designer Paul Fehér. Fehér later moved to the United States, where he became a distinguished designer for Rose Iron Works, continuing the tradition handed down to him by Kiss.

Art Deco Floor Lamp Paul Kiss And Daum Nancy
By Paul Kiss, Daum
Located in NANTES, FR
Floor lamp circa 1930 in wrought iron stamped P Kiss Paris, glass paste cup signed Daum Nancy. Perfect condition and electrified. Diameter: 42 cm Height: 175,5 cm Weight: 25 kg Daum (French establishment created in 1878) is a glass and crystal workshop located in Nancy. Founded by the industrialist and notary Jean Daum, the workshop was then taken over by his sons Auguste and Antonin, who ran it during the Art Nouveau period. It was not until the Universal Exhibition of 1900 that the company was at the forefront of the decorative art scene, when Daum received the prestigious Grand Prix medal. At this time, Daum glass became more complex, acid treatment was often used in the cutting, enameling and etching of a piece to produce glass masterpieces. Daum also produces applied glass elements, such as handles and ornamental motifs in naturalistic shapes. The Daum brothers quickly became big names in Art Nouveau, rivaling the famous designer Émile Gallé, and established themselves as leaders in the field of decorative glass after his death. In 1906, Daum revived glass paste, a process by which glass is transformed into paste, then it is applied to the surface of a mold and fired. This technique originates from ancient Egypt. Today, Daum is the only industrial crystal manufacturer that uses the glass paste process for its glass objects and crystal sculptures. Following the First World War, Paul Daum began to develop works in the Art Deco style, moving away from naturalistic forms and turning to linear, angular, simplified forms and geometric patterns characteristic of the movement. After the Second World War, Henri and Michel Daum became interested in the transparency of glass and pure lines. Daum collaborates with a large number of famous artists, such as Louis Majorelle, Salvador Dalí, Hilton Mac Connico, Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti to create glass paste objects...

19th Century Mexican San Miguel Wrought Iron Lantern
Located in Forney, TX
A most impressive and ornately decorated antique electrified hanging lantern from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (New Spain). Exquisitely hand-crafted in the 19th century (possibly late 18th century), even though San Miguel was the first town in present day Mexico to win independence from the Spanish Empire in the early nineteenth century, this lantern displays strong European old world influence. Constructed of wonderfully patinated wrought iron and oxidized tin, tall cylindrical shaped, framed with intricate scrollwork, openwork, and an abundance of fiolate decoration in the delicate form of serrated acanthus leaves. Retaining the six original bubble glass panels. The interior having a central candelabra like independently hung fixture adorned with six faux candle flame light bulbs. Originally made before the invention of electricity, this lantern has been converted from candle light to modern day electricity, accepting standard candelabra bulbs. Faux flaming bulbs included. It can be used a variety of ways, including as an indoor hanging pendant lamp, chandelier, outdoor patio or covered entry way, or placed as a table lamp on a large console table or sideboard. Timelessly elegant, producing a warm silhouette and enchanting glow with breath-taking radiating patterns, that lends to creating an ambiance of cozy romantic warmth and rich sophisticated depth, visually striking and reminiscent of a magnificent Medieval wood burning fireplace. Dimensions (approx): 36" High, 21" Diameter In the mid-18th century the settlement city of San Miguel de Allende was at its height, and this was when most of its distinctive large mansions, palaces, and religious buildings were constructed, most still remaining today. The town was also home to the area's wealthy hacienda owners. At that time, it was one of the most important and prosperous settlements in New Spain with a population reaching 30,000. By comparison, in the mid-18th century Boston...
