"Hydrangea in Blue, " 1930s Enamel Bowl with Leaves and Flower Clusters by Winter

About the Item

Created by Edward Winter, one of the masters of American enamel artistry in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, this low bowl features a composition of hydrangea flowers and leaves at its center, executed in deep, rich blues, with a rim dotted in a pattern of white enamel that resembles new-fallen snow. Edward Winter was skilled in printmaking and painting, but he became nationally known for his enamel work, newly embraced by American artists in the 1930s and 1940s. Winter attended the Cleveland Institute of Art and studied in Vienna before teaching at the Cleveland School of Art. This is a lovely and early work of Winter, and is signed on the reverse.
